Great game to watch. I died and was revived about 10 times in the last 5 minutes. I like this team's resolve, down 8 and coming back like they did. Hartsock should have pump faked to get Hobson in the air and then handed the ball off to Haws on the backside who was wide open for a layup. JT's 3 killed me. But he made up for it with defense. The phantom foul on Emery at the end was bad. They let these guys play all game and then in the last 3 minutes they get tighter than a duck's ass. That whistle on Abuou where the players couldn't even hear the whistle and Loyd took it for a dunk was absolute bullshit. So was that 2nd foul on JT on Bubba Gump. Also the foul on Hartsock on the offensive glass when Martinez was fouling him. Also, how did the down ref not call Hobson for that charge on Davies but the ref 30 feet from the play does? The MWC refs are the absolute worst. All that said, the Cougars had their opportunities and just couldn't do it.

Loyd was unconscious. He stepped up big. Props to him.

JT got all fired up because after that timeout was called when he was pressuring Hobson at halfcourt, Darrington threw a bow that hit him in the chest right in front of the ref that didn't call anything. After the break Hobson tried to shake hands with Tav and JT refused. I am sure some of that went into the altercation with Alford at game's end.

The fans were outstanding. It'd still be nice to get the right colors worn to games, but man they were loud and it translated well to the TV. The tent city they showed outside the MC was cool. I was disappointed to see some stuff thrown on the court after the game though.
The other thing during that "altercation" with JT and Hobson was the fact that JT was called for a foul on Hobson and they went to the monitors to see if it occurred before or after the timeout by Alford was called. JT got away with one there. He was going ape shit it was unreal Emery had to restrain him all the way down the court.

Also can someone explain the New Mexico is 6-0 vs ranked teams argument? They claim a win over Cal who was ranked at the time they beat them, yet they do not claim a loss to UNLV who was also ranked at the time but is not currently ranked (which is why they do not claim them). Makes no sense.

Would it have been too much to ask to draw the f*cking foul and close out regulation by hitting 2 (or 1)charity tosses? The defender was coming right at him-- all he had to do was high glass the layup, sink the + 1 and ice the game.

          Was it a foul?

No foul, but I'm saying DRAW the foul. All he had to do was bend his wrist and catch the arm. Instead he let the defender drop the axe arm/bear paw directly onto the ball during the attempted 2 handed white boy dunk.

By "snapshot in time" do you mean the present?

                From ESPN:

The game ended in a bit of minor controversy. BYU’s Jonathan Tavernari was upset over apparently being elbowed. He then had words with Alford in the handshake line.

“I was telling him he had a phenomenal year and career at BYU,’’ Alford said of the senior. “He was obviously upset and had words for me. But he came into the locker room afterwards and apologized. It was a class act. He’s a great kid and it was senior day so I felt for him. I understand what happened. He’s one of my favorites in the league.’’

SU is in a state of temporal flux; he lives in the present when his teams are winning, in the past if they aren't, and in the future when talking about teams that are historically better than the Utes. It's a confusing life but he handles the handicap quite well.

You did say draw. My bad.

I thought he should have dished to whomever was behind him (Haws?) as it looked like it would have been an uncontested layup.

It was a heckuva game and fun to watch with no kind of emotional investment.

That must be nice. Everyone thinks I'm a psychopath who watches games like this with me. I dropped more f bombs than Happy Gilmore.

                      • I feel bad for Noah. He will likely remember that block and all the things he could have done differently for years to come. Heck I still remember many missed shots, a dropped interception, and strikeouts from 20 years ago. he is a good guy he just went up against a much better athlete who made a tremendous play.

According to several people including a channel 2 cameraman and a few reporters, Alford called Tavernari an asshole that is what set JT off.

Dude. That's low, even for you. He was seriously ill and lost something like 50 pounds. Physically, he was never the same again.

                              • I only got to catch the last 5 minutes of the game. I was somewhat surprised to hear that UNM was up at the half.

Missing Jimmer was obviously huge. It seemed like the team didn't know who to give the ball to down the stretch. The clutch shot is taken by... Noah Hartsock? Two hands Noah, two hands.

UNM's inside play sealed the deal. The offensive rebound and the defensive block showed where BYU can have problems in a close game. You've just got to survive the Jimmer Offensive Onslaught, or have him order some more pregame Cafe Rio, to keep it close in order to take advantage of it.
