  • Emery vs Foster MWC DPOY

    Good discussion here.

Come guys, more basketball talk here!

Here's Wrubell's take that prompted the discussion.

    http://www.ksl.com/?nid=498&sid=9785688

    My thoughts:

Foster: What I've seen of Foster, he is tough to deal with defensively, but he also does some things poorly. He's too slow to come out on the perimeter and can't give help on ball screens. I saw him get abused by SDSU's center. You can't ignore the blocks, though, and the ability to lock up the paint in some situations.

Emery: Extremely overrated as a perimeter lockdown defender. He's not quick enough laterally to be a lockdown perimeter guy. He is extremely athletic, can deny well, and has a burst of speed to jump on the ball to pick off perimeter passes. His steals usually end up as two points on a fast break. He's a great defensive asset, but he's not perfect.

Other: Is there anyone else in the running? It seems you should be able to find an athletic defender for UNLV, SDSU, or UNM that can do a little more defensively than either of these two guys. No?

Definitely a down year for an all-around great defensive player but Foster's blocks cannot be ignored. He leads by 70 blocks in conference. That's ridiculous. He can't and won't rebound but he also can't help that his teammates stand and watch as he blocks tons of shots. Emery might win it due to his team being head and shoulders better but on a team of misfits, Foster is king and should win the award.

Foster's shot block stats are inflated by the fact that too many of his teammates give the opposition free runs at the hoop. If there was better team defense his blocks would be down, more of them would not be picked up by the opposition and turned into a basket. Some think he should be able to block the shot and corral the ball every time.

He'll learn to do that better but I might make the argument that the team filters to him a bit on purpose. The Utes lead the league in defensive 3-pt shooting because the other four are further from the basket and not concerned about letting a guy get by. They don't run to the middle, sagging off their defender to allow for the drive and kick as much as other teams do. Foster's biggest weakness will continue to be his footwork and apparently his stamina and now he has just 2 years to get better. Washburn IMO has shown more of an improvement, especially in conference play but that's an entirely different discussion.

I've only seen one full Utah game and parts of a handful of others. Most teams will work hard to defend the ball screen such that you keep the point guard out of the paint. Utah's strategy seems to be to let the guy get to the paint and then alter his shot and rotate to cover Foster's man.

Wrubbell cracks me up. It isn't shocking that he picks the BYU player, but he shows his extreme bias in his refusal to acknowledge any case against Jackson Emery. Wrubbell is a homer broadcaster, end of story, and his opinion is as valid as someone like Bill Marcroft or Frank Dolce.

His bias is heightened by his uncomfortably spooky infatuation with Lone Peak grads.

He lives about a mile from the school. At least he did a couple of years ago.

Yes I know. He and Durrant are constantly doing the Provo vs Lone Peak thing.

                    My favorite Wrubell moment

Is referring to Todd Watkins as T-Wat.

I you must know, just say it quickly.

They do if they don't play: Foster only played 10 minutes. Air Force's center was playing 20' from the hoop and can shoot the 3, so that pulled Foster out of the key. The Utes decided to go small in order to match up better.
