  • A good piece by Plaschke in the Times

on Hank Gathers; 20 years ago now. Growing up in SoCal, I remember being impacted by this greatly and it stands out in my sports moments (Gibson's HR, Magic+AIDS) of where I was when I saw it. Sad stuff to watch that video of him collapsing on the floor.

That was a magical run that Loyola Marymount put together Finally falling at the hand of the Rebels. Bo Kimball shooting left handed free throws and they had this scrappy kid that would just dive all over the floor. After every game he looked like he had been in an MMA fight. I forget his name.

Done. I can't believe it's been two decades since that sad evening. LMU was quite the fun team to watch.

I remember Bo Kimble and the left-handed free throws really well. Gathers and Reggie Lewis both died from hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

I didn't know that Gathers had fainted earlier in the season, several games prior to his death -- that was the chance to diagnose his condition, but apparently nobody figured it out. Reggie Lewis also had fainting prior to his death that could have warned people what was going on. The technology for diagnosing and treating hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is so much better now it was 20 years ago.

People faint all the time, but if fainting occurs while someone is exercising, there is often something seriously wrong. Anyone who faints during exercise needs an echocardiogram and a visit with a cardiologist.

A good piece by Bill Plaschke that is a sentence I never expected someone to say.

I think his last name was Frye. He was also a gimmie from 3 pt range.

If more teams played like LMU, I would watch several times as much basketball as I do now (and I still watch quite a bit).
