Practice report: Still-ailing Jimmer doesn't practice, is questionable at best for UTEP
January 7th, 2010
High-scoring BYU guard Jimmer Fredette is questionable, at best, to play against UTEP on Saturday, coach Dave Rose just acknowledged as the Cougars wrapped up a short, intense practice in the Marriott Center.
Fredette did not practice, and arrived halfway through the session wearing one of those long-sleeved white shirts that he wore in last night’s 77-73 win over UNLV. He watched as every other Cougar practiced.
Actually, guard Lamont Morgan Jr. went through the non-contact stuff, but was held out of scrimmaging and other drills like that.
Coaches originally feared Morgan suffered a concussion after taking a hard hit against the Rebels, but because he hasn’t had any headaches or felt nauseous, they think he might be able to play on Saturday.

As for Fredette, things are not looking good.
“He was in no condition today to practice. We do know that,” Rose said.
Simply, doctors are not certain yet what is wrong with the junior.
“We had the doc look at him, and we are trying to control the reaction he has had to some of the medication [for strep throat],” Rose said. “We will probably know a little bit more with him tomorrow, maybe on Saturday when some of the results come back.”
Asked if doctors are confident the malady is related to the allergic reaction, and not from the original sickness, Rose said nothing is certain.
“I am not confident in anything. What I do know is I have had a few medical issues myself this summer. You just kind of trust the doctors and wait to hear back. It is a tough time, not only on the team, but on the player individually because he is waiting to be told.
Right now, we just don’t know. So we will see.”
Rose said Fredette is still “having issues” with his conditioning and fatigue.
“You know when a guy is in game shape. Jimmer can play minutes in a game, but he has really lost that stamina that he has had.
“And Jimmer can play a lot of minutes. We were trying to manage that last night. I think it kind of frustrated him a little bit, but he handled it pretty well.”
Rose said it is “uncertain” whether Fredette will even make the trip to El Paso.
“We want to find out exactly what he has got, and how we can treat it. Then, time will always tell how quickly his body heals and how he gets back.”

Fellow guard Jackson Emery also struggled Wednesday night, but says his bruised heel is slowly healing and he felt better on Thursday.
“He was able to practice and go full speed....you can tell when Jackson has some issues, but today he was full go. He’s on the mend,” Rose said.
