Practice report: Still-ailing Jimmer doesn't practice, is questionable at best for UTEP
    January 7th, 2010

High-scoring BYU guard Jimmer Fredette is questionable, at best, to play against UTEP on Saturday, coach Dave Rose just acknowledged as the Cougars wrapped up a short, intense practice in the Marriott Center.
Fredette did not practice, and arrived halfway through the session wearing one of those long-sleeved white shirts that he wore in last night’s 77-73 win over UNLV. He watched as every other Cougar practiced.
Actually, guard Lamont Morgan Jr. went through the non-contact stuff, but was held out of scrimmaging and other drills like that.
Coaches originally feared Morgan suffered a concussion after taking a hard hit against the Rebels, but because he hasn’t had any headaches or felt nauseous, they think he might be able to play on Saturday.

    -----------------------

As for Fredette, things are not looking good.
“He was in no condition today to practice. We do know that,” Rose said.
Simply, doctors are not certain yet what is wrong with the junior.
“We had the doc look at him, and we are trying to control the reaction he has had to some of the medication [for strep throat],” Rose said. “We will probably know a little bit more with him tomorrow, maybe on Saturday when some of the results come back.”
Asked if doctors are confident the malady is related to the allergic reaction, and not from the original sickness, Rose said nothing is certain.
“I am not confident in anything. What I do know is I have had a few medical issues myself this summer. You just kind of trust the doctors and wait to hear back. It is a tough time, not only on the team, but on the player individually because he is waiting to be told.
Right now, we just don’t know. So we will see.”
Rose said Fredette is still “having issues” with his conditioning and fatigue.
“You know when a guy is in game shape. Jimmer can play minutes in a game, but he has really lost that stamina that he has had.
“And Jimmer can play a lot of minutes. We were trying to manage that last night. I think it kind of frustrated him a little bit, but he handled it pretty well.”
Rose said it is “uncertain” whether Fredette will even make the trip to El Paso.
“We want to find out exactly what he has got, and how we can treat it. Then, time will always tell how quickly his body heals and how he gets back.”

    ------------------

Fellow guard Jackson Emery also struggled Wednesday night, but says his bruised heel is slowly healing and he felt better on Thursday.
“He was able to practice and go full speed....you can tell when Jackson has some issues, but today he was full go. He’s on the mend,” Rose said.

It really does. But I like that Rose referred to his medical issues in the past tense (okay, present perfect? jerks). May it always stay that way.

His brother in law just "confirmed" mono over on CB. I don't know what that means in terms of how long he'll be out.

Mono can linger for months. He should never have ncmo-ed with that Arizona cheerleader.

            He did say "slight case."

BYU hoops has been pretty lucky with respect to the injury bug for quite a few years. If Jimmer is out for a month and then takes another month to get into shape, it will be a real shame.

However, if "slight case" means that the kid can start regaining his strength in another week or so, it could end up being extremely lucky in timing and a huge blessing in disguise. After UTEP in El Paso, a game I think BYU loses without Jimmer, BYU gets AFA, CSU and WYO in succession. I do think BYU can win those 3 without Fredette and it will continue to give Lloyd and Abouo a chance to improve as well as Tavernari to regain more of his mojo. I thought a huge win for BYU two years ago was the win over Utah in SLC where BYU gutted out a win by playing hard defense and taking advantage of Ute mistakes. That type of toughness is hugely beneficial down the stretch and in March. Some more wins through gutsy defense and contributions made by guys not normally asked to contribute in that way could prove very beneficial.

If BYU loses one or two without Jimmer and he comes back and regains his form of the past few weeks, the seeding committee will look favorably upon BYU and discount the poor play without Fredette. His scoring 49 against Arizona and getting onto the Wooden List will give him, and BYU with him, clout in that manner.

Britton Johnsen had mono his last season and he missed the conference tourny and the NCAA tournament.

I think ability to play through mono really depends 1) how crappy you feel /weak you are - which may vary day-to-day, and 2) on whether your spleen swells up or not - if it does, any contact sports is a definite no-no - an inadvertant elbow could potentially rupture your spleen and literally kill you. His brother might mean that his case is 'slight' becasue his spleen hasn't gotten inflamed.

And a bad case of mono can take months to clear up - my senior year in HS, our 'star' running back missed the entire football season because of mono and an inflamed spleen.

This is what Wrubell posted about an hour ago:
As of Thursday, plans were for Jimmer Fredette to travel with the team to El Paso, but I have not received an update on his condition today. Fredette's body rash had diminished some from Wednesday to Thursday, but Dave Rose's status assignment of "uncertain" best describes the Fredette situation.

Just take out his spleen. It worked for Rose.

This sounds like great news. If Jimmer being out for the next 2-4 weeks was a possibility at all, I think there's no way he travels on this trip. Silly to wear him down travelling if it was a long term thing.

I doubt he sees any significant action until the SDSU game. He may travel but I bet he sits the next two out and then plays 10-20 mpg the next two.

That's great news to me. I was worried at this point knowing he has mono that he's out for a month and spends another month getting back to form.

I am only speculating but my guess is that it being a "slight" case of mono that he will be pretty weak for about two weeks from contraction, my guess is that keeps him weak until the middle of next week. I am surprised he is travelling to El Paso as I expected him to just stay in Utah and rest/drink chicken noodle soup until after the AFA road trip and then start getting his strength back. I figured he would see a few 5-7 minutes spans of playing time against CSU and then WYO and would hopefully be ready for 30+ minutes against SDSU.

Once again I am speculating and making up things that work out well with how I project the BYU schedule.

                              Here is to hoping!
