An interesting idea. I love the NCAA tournament, and I would watch every game if this happened, but 64 teams (the play-in game is a joke) is like 90ft between the bases in baseball, or 100 yards on a football field.

How long has it been 64 teams? Only 30 years or so? I don't see that as sacred at all.

This is why I favor a full on 32 game football playoff, eliminating ALL bowls, placing teams in geographic regions to minimize travel, and making early rounds home/away games. Once you put in a football playoff of 8 teams, it will go to 16 within 5-10 years when they see all the money. Then it will go to 32 within ten years after that. Just fast forward straight to the 32.

This is fantastic, NCAA. You're thinking of expanding a tournament that is NOT broken and already very inclusive. At the same time, you throw your hands up in the air at the thought of expanding a football playoff to include more than two teams in the case where the system is clearly broken.

Don't you want a football playoff? If a playoff were installed in college football and made as much money as some believe it would go from 8 to 16 to 32 to 48 and get watered down and ruined.

Expansion would not be good for the NCAA men's basketball tourney, someone smarter than me would this fit into the "law of diminishing returns"? (I put the ? outside just for woot)

I agree with woot that punctuation usually belongs outside the quotation marks, but you really shouldn't have use the marks in this case.

This essentially absorbs the NIT.

32 teams would have a first-round bye and 64 would not. Let the bickering begin over who deserved a bye. "Our RPI was 27 and theirs was 36! We shouldn't have had to play a third game in five days! Is there an actuary in Pennsylvania who can create a graph showing how the committee annually screws us more than any other team?"

Completely unnecessary. Every good team in the country has a chance to win as it is. There is no reason to let anybody else in.

Notwithstanding the fact that this is a terrible idea, I would definitely get enjoyment from the media and coaches complaining about bubble teams #97 and #98 that got screwed by the selection committee.

This is not the same argument.

I want everyone to have access to a championship. You have that with a basketball tournament. 64 seems to be a great number. Personally I think 16 teams for football is enough. But maybe Jay is right with 32.
