  • Nice job Y fans.

Lots of props to the fans from Wake in this article:

    http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/recap?gameId=290030252

Wake Forest had to rally from an eight-point deficit in the second half and an entire game of deafening taunts and chants from the home fans, who were loud and rowdy throughout the night.

"In the ACC, there's some great crowds but this one was amazing," said Jeff Teague, who led Wake Forest with 30 points, one off his career high.

... The crowd of 26,096 was the second-largest in Marriott Center history and the fans, thousands in matching white BYU T-shirts, were loud and rowdy from the time the Deacons started warming up until the game ended.

"That parallels anything you'll see in the ACC," Wake Forest coach Dino Gaudio said. "I told my team that was not a good win tonight -- that was a great win against a great team."

Teague said the ACC crowds aren't as loud as what he faced Saturday.

The fans were so loud, it made the AP think there were 5,000 more fans than there really were. THAT'S impressive.

NOt quite 5,000. Announced attendance was 23,096. So they were only 3,000off.

I could only hear the audio as I don't have the mtn yet, but it sure sounded impressive. Now if they would just win one of these close ones.

I took my 3 daughters aged 6 and 4 and 4. One of the 4 year olds would cover her ears and get under her chair. The six year old gets better each game. At the Washington game she wanted to leave after 20 minutes in the stadium (we were right in the sun), at UNLV she never whined until halftime but started clapping towards the end, against Wake Forest she got real excited for the Cougarette dancers and then in the latter part of the second half she even began screaming when Wake had the ball.

          It was loud. Really loud.

This leads to my organizational criticism. BYU needs an 18,000 - 20,000 basketball only arena. It is sad to have 8,000 students at a game and only half are close to the court. Build a new arena and let the students surround the court. Put season ticket holders above the students and then suites above them. Fill the top with general admission and make it loud as hell.

It was a great atmoshpere. Thanks to TripleD for getting me the tickets. My brother and I commented this felt like the old days. I wanted to win badly, but that was such great entertainment and fun that I went home feeling fine.

We show up a little early and the lady and husband behind us have their coats on our seats. We stand there and the lady demands to see our tickets before they would remove their coats. I would have loved to tell her to F-off, but I was with my very religious brother.

We show her the tickets and she says, we wanted to make sure you weren't students and would stand up during the game. Luckily she told that to my brother and he told me he didn't want to tell me that until after the game because he knew what I would say whether he was there or not. Students my butt.

I digress, it was a lot of fun. I also appreciate Rose not taking offense that he got booed while trying to quiet the crowd down. He actually in a quote said he didn't blame the crowd. I won't be surprised if we lose him in the not to near future.

Unless he has a great run in the NCAA tourney I doubt there is ever too much interest in him.

Besides that I think he is actually upgrading the talent at BYU. He has some pretty capable kids in the pipeline. Next year his top recruits will be Demarcus Harrison and Kyle Collinsworth, both kids will be as highly recruited as Davies and Haws. He has two more years of Fredette, Abuou and Harstock, who I think has yet to really get a chance to show what he is made of. I thought that the cupboard would get bare after Plaisted and Cummard, but he has found some legitimate talented kids. The part that is surprising to me is the glut of capable LDS perimeter players out there. BYU is far more athletic, and getting more athletic, than it has ever been. Rose, to some extent, is following the recruiting to tilt the field model used by TCU and Utah. If he keeps finding bigger wing players who can play the 4, which is what I think Kyle and Chris Collinsworth will end up playing, and he can find enough big PF's to play center his system might be able to work at BYU long term. I think the only reason he would leave is for a big time job and I doubt he has enough postseason success to warrant that type of consideration. It would be nice if he could prove me wrong, on the postseason success part.

Besides that he has the chance to coach Charles Abuou, and most men would give their manhood for that opportunity!

Yeah I agree, BYU is actually reloading and not rebuilding. Next year with the departure of Lee you wont see a ton of drop off.

                  Jimmer
                  Emery
                  Abouo
                  JT
                  Miles

with Haws, Anderson, Hartsock, Davies, Loyd and Morgan off the bench.

Dave Rose is really building a great program, but I do think he needs to win in the post season.

Davies is going to redshirt next year. He is a year younger than his class and he isn't going to play very much next season, and he has great potential. Let him mature physically and develop some maturity over a redshirt year and then let him be a 4 year starter. Especially if MacGregor gets another year back from a medical RS.

This year BYU is limited with respect to depth. Hartsock's late mission return and his injury have somewhat ruined his freshman year. The only big that BYU can rely upon is MacGregor, and that is only for defense. Anderson is a better offensive player but his defense, due to his lack of girth, is such a liability. If Anderson can put of some weight and develop some strength I think he could be a quality back up next year. I like the kid and think he has the potential to be good if he can get the physical presence neccesary to defend in the post. He can block and alter shots and be a good post scorer. I really think even if Gavin doesn't get a Medical RS that BYU is much deeper in the post with Hartstock and Anderson. If Gavin is back, all the better but if Gavin is not awarded a medical RS then go get a JC big.

On the perimeter BYU will have Lloyd to go along with Haws and Morgan. Potentially, I could see Tavernari getting some minutes next year on the perimeter for stretches with Hartstock in at the 4. BYU could pull Pinegar's scholarship, which I think was awarded simply because Trent went and go get a JC wing as only having one wing sub hurt BYU against WF. Our boys were plumb tuckered out the last 4 minutes. Lloyd will help, but if BYU could find a JC wing like Lemes that could give BYU 8-10 mpg it would be really helpful. One as good as Lyday or Hall would be nice, but given the returning Emery and Abuou and the incoming Haws I doubt a really good JC wing would come to BYU knowing that those 3 are going to take the lions share of the minutes. My guess is in the end we see JT playing some minutes at the 3. I could see him getting 25 mpg at the 4 and 5-10 at the 3 depending upon situations.

My guess is this year we see a tightened 8 man rotation of the starters plus Morgan, Abuou and MacGregor off the bench. I think if Hartstock didn't get injured he would be in a 9 man rotation, but I think that injury fouled up plans. Next year, assuming MacGregor doesn't return, I see it as a good 9 man with Anderson and Harstock off the bench with the bigs and Haws and Morgan off the bench on the perimeter. The emergency players will be Lloyd and then either a JC transfer or Davies.

                      Where's Haws in this?

I see the rotation as pretty much the exact same as this year, with Abouo getting Lee's starting minutes and Haws getting Abouo's backup minutes.

I think next year's outlook as no worse than this year's maybe better. JT's maxed out, but I see big improvement upside in Miles, Jimmer, Abouo, Emery and possibly Harstock.

I see Haws' role exactly as you do. I would list the upside as the following:

1.) Hartstock. Noah has a great offensive game and I think that he was starting to earn more minutes this year but his injury has set him back. I really think he has a chance to be a serious offensive weapon off the bench next year. This year we have no bench scoring save Abuou and while he is improving, he is still offensively raw and bit uncomfortable. I think Harstock takes a huge step forward next year.

2.) Abuou. You can't coach spectacular athletic ability. He has it in spades and watching his mechanics and how he shoots in warmups, I think the kid is going to develop into a good outside shooter. Once teams have to respect his outside shot, he will kill them with his explosive ability. I see this kid as a bigger, stronger Tyrell Lyday. Hansen overpowerd people with physical strength, Abuou is going to just beat guys off the dribble, once he proves to be a consistent outside shooter, and won't need to overpower them.

3.) Emery. I like Emery but I don't think he is as good an athlete as Abuou. Certainly, being back from a mission for a year will help him to find himself, but I believe his role doesn't change a great deal next year. I think Abuou will leapfrog him as a scorer and the big 3 change from Cummard, Fredette and JT to Abou, Fredette and JT.

4.) Miles. He will improve but I am not expecting a huge step.

I am not convinced Jimmer improves significantly. That kid is damn good already. The more this year moves forward I get more and more bullish about next year. Especially because I think it becomes Jimmer's team. He becomes the go to guy and co-captain along with JT.
