  • BYU future looks bright

    Loyd soph
    Abouo soph
    Davies frosh
    Haws frosh
    Hartsock soph
    C Collinsworth soph next year
    K Collinsworth frosh next year

That's a nucleus of seven guys that will be here for the next 5-6 seasons all have already proven can be solid starters for a good MWC team. There are at least a few on that list I expect to be first team MWC type players.

I expect teams similar to this year and the last few consistently over the next 5-6 seasons with not much risk on the downside. Depending on a few things: if we can find a point guard for when Jimmer leaves, or if we find a dominating center between Davies and/or a new recruit, our ceiling could be much higher than what it's been.

It is a nice looking and very flexible roster. I think it is clear that Rose, if left to his own devices, wants players to be as versatile as possible. Increasingly, he is also trading pure size for athleticism and prefers guys to have the skill set of players a position smaller. You know who he would have loved? Shane Knight. Knight would have done very well with Rose's system.

It's clear Rose puts a huge emphasis on perimeter defense. Nearly every personnel issue I've scratched my head at over the years with Rose has been one where I thought maybe he should go bigger and Rose went smaller. I'm buying into the concept. This team is better with Jimmer, Jax, Haws/Abouo, Tav, Miles than Jimmer, Jax, Tav, Hartsock, Miles.

Shane Knight? Tall, slow guy that won't defend or rebound. No, not Rose's style. Not any coach's style.

It will be interesting next year. I think he plays the following:

        Fredette
        Emery
        Abuou
        Lloyd
        Kyle Collinsworth
        Hartsock
        Chris Collinsworth
        Davies
        Anderson

I think that if Davies can learn how to defend and stay out of foul trouble and CC gets into shape enough to play 20 mpg, Anderson will then see limited minutes and I could see the rotation tightening to 8 guys. Hartsock can play both 5 and 4 and I think Chris Collinsworth can play both 4 and 3. Lloyd will also play both 1 and 2. I really think that if Davies and Hartsock can develop into legitimate double digit scorers, something I don't think is out of the question, for next year this team could be legitimately good.

I think Magnusson and Martineau will get garbage time. I think Anson Winder will get some minutes early in the year but will only see garbage time by conference games. I have no clue with the 13th scholie is. My guess is that if they can get a good JC player at any position they will. If they can't land a good impact transfer it would not surprise me if they offer that LDS kid out at Mesa CC. He could be an insurance policy if Collinsworth the Elder is not ready to go and needs to RS and then he would back up Hartsock. But I really hope Collinsworth is ready to go next year, I figure it will be rough for him but I really liked him as a true freshman.

Next year should be a great year, potentially better than this year. Jimmer and Jackson with Loyd backing up will rival BYU's best backcourt ever. I see Hartsock and Davies as the 4 and 5, and I think they have a chance to be better than this year's 4 and 5. Abouo with one more year of finishing will be solid at the 3, though I wouldn't be shocked to see K Collins come in and beat him just as Haws has this year. I don't think C Collins will ever play the 3 at BYU, but he'll be a solid backup at the 4 and 5 next year and future starter at the 4. Anderson maybe gets 10 minutes back up time tops. Biggest question mark is Davies. If he doesn't progress much, they're likely about as good as this year. If he blows up, the team could go as high as top 15.

I think you underestimate Chris Collinsworth. I think he has the athleticism to guard at the 3. I think his future is at the 4 but with Hartsock here for two more years, I see him finding some minutes on the perimeter.

I also agree with you about Kyle. He sounds to me that he is offensively more ready to contribute as a true freshman than Haws.

I really like Davies' and Hartsocks' potential. They could both be really good post scorers next year and Hartsock should also be able to be a threat playing facing the basket.

Look for BYU to land a 6'6 JC wing player out of California.

I just have a hunch about this one with that 13th schollie.

Low expectations here. This would not satisfy me.

Ping me when we have a tourney win ... even one game. Until then I am firmly in the skeptical column.
