  • Holy Crap we need Jim Boylen!

Or at least, someone with Boylen's skill set.

So I'm listening to Seth's vidblog made at BYU's practice, and they're commenting on Brandon Davies struggling against Chris Miles in the post. His whole life Davies has been tall enough to turn and shoot, turn and shoot. But now he was up against Miles who is 2" taller, and not letting Davies get off anything. And Davies has absolutely zero inside post moves to shake off Miles and getting more and more frustrated.

And the commentator is talking about how Chris Miles doesnt really have any inside moves either, and that Trent only had a few due to his athletic ability but he never got any better at BYU. And maybe if he had acquired some inside moves Hafa wouldnt have had to play the goon the way he did.

Not that it's BYU's fault that their big men don't develop--the commentator was clear: no school in NCAA has the resources to hire and keep a big man coach.

Still, it would be nice to have a Boylen clone somewhere on the Cougar roster.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but hasn't Terry Nashif been BYU's "big man coach" for the last 2 years or so?

Could be true, but Nashif was a point guard. Dont remember what his post moves were like.

I'll take the guy who coached Hakeem Olajuwon and Yao Ming.

In exchange for Dave Rose's uber pwnage of cancer and lethal transition game, we will grant BYU Boylen's expertise on post players.

Terry Nashif has been hired as the basketball scene director/choreographer for the Teen Wolf remake.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

What is the required number of post moves to be effective as a big man? In my experience, you can be very effective with 3. You can be decent with 2. You can be amazing with 4.

Chris has a drop step to either side. He also has an up and under to either side. He lacks a jump hook but I think that is based on a lack of hand size. If you can't score with the moves he has, the problem isn't more moves, it is execution of the moves.

Trent had a similar problem. He had sufficient moves, his execution was lacking.

Rafa lacked sufficient post moves. Even his senior year he was lacking in solid post footwork.

I think our problem in the post is lack of depth. If we had more quality depth, these guys would improve out of necessity. You don't need a coach to tell you your shot didn't go in.

I also think we need an offense that is more conducive to big men scoring ... if we want the bigs to score more. Our bigs cross the paint, establish position where they can, and consistently get the ball too late, then they are asked to score with their back to the basket too far from the hoop. The system is killing these guys. Our guards need to hit them as they cross the paint. They need to lead the big to the rim, not away from the rim.

Simply put, our system and our guards make our bigs look worse than they are. Nashif isn't the problem it is the guards currently playing and our 5-1 offense.

I've heard this argument a lot. I don't know if it's legit or not. I do know Keena's development as a post scorer was very impressive at BYU. Haffa also showed significant improvement. Plaisted didn't develop squat. Miles' improvement has been baby steps. Jury's out, still, I guess.

I have seen Davies multiple times while he was in high school. He is a good get for BYU, but he is FAR from ready. He is very raw. I would be shocked if he is not redshirted this year.
