update: a quick inquiry reveals that the clip was organized by Ashton and Demi. Produced by Oprah (HARPO Productions). And given the go ahead by the Prez.

Ultimately, the idea originated in the offices of Ashton and Demi, though.

Perhaps the video should have mentioned "Quarters for Christmas."
I have four younger sisters. One is in Junior High, another in High School, and two in college. They are all A students on the honor rolls of their respective schools. The oldest is in the nursing program; she'll probably know about stem cell research. If any of the rest of them can tell me what stem cell research is, or if any of them know what UNICEF is, I will give you a dollar.

        Okay...

Why would you expect people to want to collaborate with a guy that they dislike immensely?
I guess for starters, if this sort of thing will improve community involvement (your words) and make this country a better place to live (I know you don't think it's patriotic, but I do to a certain extent), then why does it matter if they dislike the President? Is community involvement only important when a President they like is in office?

Sorry if that isn't persuasive enough, but it is the question I have.

I guess what I am saying is that you aren't really asking that question. You are making an observation intended to point out some sort of inconsistency: these guys didn't do this when Bush was in office. You are masking it as an honest, bipartisan question, though.

If it were an honest question, you would also probably be more inclined to ask why no conservatives are rushing to help Obama these days.

The answer is simple: these celebs don't agree with Bush's politics, so they refrain from working with him. Similarly, conservative celebs don't agree with Obama's politics, so they aren't helping him out.

If you are truly asking a bi-partisan question, then I would say that in a perfect world, republicans would fall over themselves to help democrats better the country and democrats would fall over themselves to help republicans do the same.

I'd like to think it is an honest question. And you're right - I should be asking why no conservatives are rushing to help Obama. It would have been nice to see Schilling, Arnold and the D.A. from Law & Order on that video as well. Or they could possibly do their own.

I guess the reason I chose to pick on the Dems/Liberals this time is because it's a little frustrating to see the contrast from the majority of celebs and media in terms of support for the current president compared to the lack of support for the last president. If anything, the bad president needs the most help. But due to partisanship, people will continue to put aside doing the right thing in favor of doing that which helps their personal cause.

I think it's safe to bet your sisters are better students than I was, and (while I don't remember exactly when I learned about UNICEF) I definitely was familiar with UNICEF before I finished high school.

I first learned of UNICEF from the Simpsons, in the episode where McBain parachutes into hostile territory to deliver the crate full of UNICEF pennies. I believe I was a freshman in college at the time.

you are actually right on the pulse, smr. There was an article recently in one of the traders that noted this very thing....in the media age, when we have Democrat presidents celebs turn out in droves. When we have Republican presidents, celebs stay away.

I think there are several reasons for this general phenomenon.

Conervative politics tend to attack Hollywood (movies, music, etc). I think this turns off the celebs.

Media centers also tend to be in more liberal cities: LA and NYC, for example.

The entertainment industry has a very well-established connection to the gay community. This is no secret.

Out of sheer coincidence, our last 2 democratic presidents happened to also be very keen and polished media schmoozers: Clinton and Obama. Our last 2 republican presidents were seen as a wimp and an imbecile: Bush Sr. and W. I say "coincidence" genuinely, because no President in my lifetime had the gravitas that Reagan exuded. Not even Clinton. And not even close. Reagan was Republican. And not all media loved Reagan. but Reagan had charisma, he had style, he had suave, and he had the people in his pocket. So it IS possible for a Republican to get ahead in the media.

Add to that certain pressures from within Repub circles:

The religious right probably doesn't want to see GWB fraternizing too much with the media elite.

To court the entertainment industry is to encircle oneself in a host of thorny political issues (gay rights, social values, freedom of speech, women in the workplace to name a few).

Anyhow, you are definitely correct. Partisanship abounds.

The high schooler knew what stem cell research is. None of them had heard about UNICEF.
