I have an uncle who is very good friends with Ted K. Close enough that when my grandmother died Ted and his wife Victoria (I can't remember but I think she goes by Vicki) made the trip out to Utah for the funeral. Politically I'm not a fan of Kennedy but due to my uncle's friendship I had to reevaluate my opinion of him on a personal level.
During my uncle's talk he commented about how grateful he was that Ted would come out to Utah and referred to him as his brother a few times. After I'd helped cart the casket to the hearse I noticed Ted and his wife were standing around closeby so I put a sour expression on my face, approached him, and asked him if he was my uncle's brother did that mean that he was my uncle too?
Everyone around was cracking up including Ted and Victoria. He responded in the affirmative and bantered with me until it was time to leave for the cemetary.
Ted did some dumb stuff in his life but it seems to me that he matured as he aged and was actually a very nice fellow. He made a good choice in Victoria as she is about as friendly and engaging of a person as you would ever want to meet. I know a few other people who know Ted personally (all of them on the right side of the aisle) who will all tell you that Ted on a personal level is a pretty good guy.
I think the same about Bill Clinton. Yes, he's a philanderer and has some other flaws but the guy is interesting. In fact I think going to lunch with him would be fascinating. I suspect that away from politics he would most likely just be one of the boys.
I know there are those that think Ted is evil because of mistakes in his youth or his political views. I submit to you that differing political views do not necessarily make a person evil or a jerk. Also if most of us were judged by dumb things we did when we were young we'd all be in trouble.
R.I.P. Ted.
