  • I would love someone to defend this

I heard this one on the radio on my way to work: what in the hell were the parents thinking on this one?

"The first thing I learned upon becoming a head coach after fifteen years as an assistant was the enormous difference between making a suggestion and making a decision."

"They talk about the economy this year. Hey, my hairline is in recession, my waistline is in inflation. Altogether, I'm in a depression."

"I like to bike. I could beat Lance Armstrong, only because he couldn't pass me if he was behind me."

Defend wearing the shirts or defend sending the kids home.

I would be happy to defend the position of sending the kids home. Of course I am not a fan of unlimited free speech. That is why I wish they would do something about art depicting "peeing on Christ" and things like that.

Hate is hate, no matter who or what group it is directed toward.

Defend the shirts. I should be more specific.

This is a losing proposition for the parents. School districts can impose very strict dress codes and this isn't the first time some nutjob parents have tried to challenge the schools. I grew up in a district that didn't allow boys to grow hair past the collar on a t-shirt and that didn't allow kids to wear professional team apparel to school. Earrings were also out and you couldn't wear shorts between the months of November and March. Some obese white trash single mom was outraged that her kid couldn't wear a rattail to school and took the district to court- and lost.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

lulz I see what you did there.

Are the parents amazingly dumb? Yep. Are the kids? Well, the 10-year-old probably doesn't know any better, but the high school kids should.

Were free speech laws violated? That's a trickier question.

can't argue. It was dumb, but the comment of:

"I bet their parents think they are Great Americans" was uncalled for and was you trying to bait people...

It is HFN's way. Everyone just lets it slide. I recommend you do the same.

No. I don't think so. When I was in school, I was not allowed to wear anything with alcohol or tobacco logos. I also couldn't wear a shirt with profanity or drug-related sayings. School districts have the right to establish a dress code for school and banning shirts with hateful speech is certainly within their right, I am sure.
What's to explain? It's a bunch of people, most of whom you've never met, who are just as likely to be homicidal maniacs as they are to be normal everyday people, with whom you share the minutiae of your everyday life. It's totally normal, and everyone would understand.

As far as free speech goes, remember we are dealing with children not of age. Free speech doesn't really apply to them. I personally feel that policy should extend through college.

Where do you draw that line? Can schools ban anything they want?

Pretty sure that's not true, but maybe the lawyers on the board can weigh in.

I agree. They should just stick to picking on Mormons.

This is a great example of why public schools should require and provide uniforms and laundry services for those uniforms.
