    Robert Redford

I don't know if any of you read the letters to the editor in the SL Tribune, but a high school classmate of mine wrote the following:

Utah’s independent news source since 1871, The Salt Lake Tribune covers news, entertainment, sports and faith for Salt Lake City and the state of Utah.

He's not a fan of Robert Redford.
There's no such thing as luck, only drunken invincibility. Make it happen.

Tila Tequila and Juggalos, America’s saddest punchline since the South.

    Yesterday was Thursday, Thursday
    Today is Friday, Friday (Partyin’)
    …
    Tomorrow is Saturday
    And Sunday comes afterwards

I'm not a fan of Redford either. However, I am a fan of the inapproriate use of the word retarded. It's the bizarro cigarrette. Every time I read it or hear of its inapproriate use, my stress level and blood pressure go down and I imagine it probably adds nine minutes or so to my lifespan.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

I find it interesting that Redford became an environmentalist AFTER he tore up the mountainside of Sundance to build a ski resort. he has no credibility with anyone outside of Hollywood.

        Your classmate is a stud.

        Redford is a putz.

I'm going to guess that like you, he would have lobbed a urine bomb at Redford if given the chance.

The resort was there before Redford was. He improved access but he didn't create the resort.

It was a sheep ranch with a small ski slope. He definitely developed it, and he is a first class hypocrite.

Robert Redford is not using "retarded" inappropriately. He's not lampooning special needs people. He's deriding his enemies for being backward or ignorant. I'm not saying I agree with him, but it's not fair to say he's innapropriately using the word.

I didn't say he didn't develop it. I said it was already there. Truthfully, everyone here is understating his hypocrisy. Bob's stated intention in creating the limits to development in North Fork Canyon was to stop dilution of developable mountain properties in an area where he and his friends held all developable land. He made himself and his friends very wealthy by a small donation to a preserve and a large campaign to get other surrounding lands likewise donated/condemned. It was very clever.

More hypocrisy? Bob rides his enduro bike everywhere in the mountain when he is there but has fought to limit the ability of others to do the same.

I could go on. Make no doubt, Bob is a first degree hypocrite and is a total prick. I just wanted to correct the mistaken belief that he created the ski resort. I don't recall the exact number but the majority of the ski acerage was already dedicated to alpine skiing prior to his ownership.

I almost forgot...my favorite Redford story occurred when Bob's girlfriend Billy made a bunch of paintings to hang in one of the restaurants. The resort people hid the paintings in the backroom because they sucked. Billy was pissed so Bob spend huge amounts of money renovating what was essentially a storage room so it would be part of the restaurant on a more regular basis. He even colorcoded the new cushions and the fireplace to try and make the paintings look better in there. Children still cried when they saw the paintings.

I'm not defending Redford, but it is possible to enjoy skiing and even own or develop a ski resort while expressing conservationis or environmentalist concerns, and not be a hypocrit. I think your all's Mormon upbringing has got you stuck in a binary POV (to use one of the Mormon progressives' favorite words). In other words, environmentalists don't all want to bring the entire world to a halt.

I understand now. I took your post to mean that you were defending him. My mistake.

I agree that a ski resort can have a negligible environmental impact. Development for housing, on the other hand, has a substantial impact. I love Dennis Miller's quote on this: "The difference between developers and environmentalists: a developer is someone who wants to build a cabin in the woods, and an environmentalist is someone who already has one."

Are ski resorts really that bad for the environment?

Like I said, his stated reason was to drive up property values. He sold it with an environmental pitch. He told me that after pitching the environment for that purpose he really started to become a conservationist. I would say that he is now primarily a true believer but he didn't start that way.

Depends but a low altitude one like Sundance is pretty harsh. They have to make snow with that chemical in it every year to make the base. That isn't a great thing for the environment. The clearing of natural brush to make the runs causes run off and erosion issues as well.
