  • Obama's stimulus package

I rarely follow politics beyond listening to NPR when I'm in the car, so political junkies, what do you think of his stimulus package (economic--DDD)? To me, it seems really bone-headed--too slow to do any good, brings us to a potential TRILLION dollar budget deficit, and like all expansions of government spending, irreversible. He compares it to a blood transfusion. I think at best, it's taking your patient in the ICU and starting him on a weightlifting program.

I've been pleasantly surprised with his cabinet picks, but this seems like a really bad idea.
At least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah

Pleasantly surprised by his cabinet picks? Care to elaborate on that.

I'm a big Clinton fan (our only fiscally responsible president in the last thirty years). But I'm not really interested in that debate--I'm more curious about what people think of the spending package.

        bump...
still no comments on this? A multi-trillion dollar stimulus package and no one cares?

I care, but I promised my wife that I would try to no longer use the language needed to express how I feel about it.

Let's just say that it doesn't surprise me that a socialist would want to push this.

The problem is this -- no one knows if any of this is going to work or not. If it works, ideology be damned, it will have been worth the huge cost. If it doesn't, the conservatives will say it failed because the free market wasn't allowed to take its course, the progressives will say it failed because corporate greed proved to be a bigger force than the free marketeers ever imagined, and the centrists will say we didn't do enough, and that progressives and conservatives tied their hands. Of course we will all be griping while standing around in a soup line...

You lost me at "Obama's stimulus package." The 'Napper in me couldn't get past the thread title.

Few people know this but in Obama's stimulus was a big extension of tax deferrals to infrastructure related companies. This has resulted in many utilities not paying federal income taxes in 2010 and 2011. This was a big gift to companies courtesy of Obama/Pelosi/Reid and whoever else pushed through the stimulus package. The company I work for had their annual shareholders meeting this week and we had a couple dozen protesters that made their way into the meeting and interrupted at different points of time, claiming we were stealing from the 99%. These were evidently OWS people.

I'm just going on a gut feeling here, but I bet all, or a significant majority, of these protesters will be casting a ballot for Obama in November The idiocy of some people will never cease to amaze me.

And what was your bonus in 2010 and 2011?

My bonus was new carpet for the house. When you are married you don't get a bonus.

I saw a presentation yesterday that served as a proxy for the stimulus money flowing through environmental channels. There was a lot of environmental money in the Stim. It is all gone. It started petering out at the end of 2011 for cities, states and non-profits. The (profitable) private sector still has some, but it will be gone probably by summer.

Of course this is just the environmental piece of the pie, but it was a large slice.
