I get the emotional fragility of many of their songs, but the look is a little off the deep end, even given their emotional problems. Oh well, I guess it worked for them.

IMO, it was a brilliant marketing ploy by Smith. People know The Cure by sight, even if they're not familiar with the music.

From a marketing standpoint, it was genius. They are probably one of the most memorable and successful bands of the 80's and their look definitely helped. Now, if you asked Smith, I would bet he wouldn't publicly call it marketing, since when you are marketing everyone knows that you have sold out. However, it has many of the hallmarks of a good marketing play.
