  • Racist Republicans?

I've heard this quip in a couple of places lately, most recently from Bill Maher (though it wasn't the first time. He recycles half of his content from other comedians).

If you are a Republican, you aren't necessarily a racist, but if you are a racist, chances are pretty good that you are also a republican.

So whadya'll think? Any truth to this?

There are plenty of racists in both parties. Bad generalization. Bill Maher sucks.

I think it was an obtuse reference to The Southern Strategy:

In American politics, the Southern strategy refers to a Republican method of winning Southern states in the latter decades of the 20th century and first decade of the 21st century by exploiting racism among white voters. Some analysts think widespread demographic shifts and the election of Barack Obama as president in 2008 are signs that the Southern strategy is declining in significance.
You really think that there are just as many racist dems as republicans? I mean there are certainly racist dems, but you think the numbers are even close to being close?

Some truth, as there is an equal chance that if you're a racist you're a Democrat.

Maybe it's not close, but I think it's a dangerous generalization to make. There are lots of racist democrats in the south that are democrats merely because of tradition lasting since the days of the civil war.

            Yes.

Republicans don't do as good a job at hiding their racism as Democrats do.

I think that racism is fairly immune to political affiliation. As are most other "isms"

"They talk about the economy this year. Hey, my hairline is in recession, my waistline is in inflation. Altogether, I'm in a depression."

"I like to bike. I could beat Lance Armstrong, only because he couldn't pass me if he was behind me."

So basically you two think The Southern Strategy has finished its course and has no significant residual hold on the Republican party?

I think Dems calling Repubs racist is to direct attention away from the racism in the Dem party.

Remember, it was the Republicans that pushed for federal funds being denied to groups that practiced discrimination against minorities that got the Civil Rights Act of '64 passed.

This is a faulty hypothesis. Voting for Obama does not absolve someone from racism. There are plenty of reasons to vote for a candidate, even if you do not approve of the person.

Racism permeates at all levels and in every part of our country. To ascribe it to any one group is socially irresponsible....which explains why Bill Maher was the one promulgating it.

And btw, you don't have to be white to be racist or promote racist ideology. Another fallacy that muddles the discussion of racism in our country.

Way back in the sixties back at USU there was a running back at USU named Roy Shivers. He told us in the Oakland area he was from, there were other black families who would not let their daughters date him, because they thought he was too black. Would that be considered racist or can blacks be racist toward blacks.

Do you consider opposition to illegal immigration as racist?
