  • How Mitt Romney Decided Trump Is Guilty

Romney, a devout member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, described to me the power of taking an oath before God: “It’s something which I take very seriously.” Throughout the trial, he said, he was guided by his father’s favorite verse of Mormon scripture: Search diligently, pray always, and be believing, and all things shall work together for your good. “I have gone through a process of very thorough analysis and searching, and I have prayed through this process,” he told me. “But I don’t pretend that God told me what to do.”

In the end, the evidence was inescapable. “The president did in fact pressure a foreign government to corrupt our election process,” Romney said. “And really, corrupting an election process in a democratic republic is about as abusive and egregious an act against the Constitution—and one's oath—that I can imagine. It's what autocrats do.”
Soooooo cool. Mitt just fucking happens!!!
    Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

He did a decent job of recapping the claims and defenses. But there's a disconnect from that to why he did what he did.

Look, Mitt is old, he's run for president. He doesn't need this. He'd rather be an outlier, and bet on his legacy. But I think to history he may look vengeful, pious, resentful, and petty.

Is he really going to vote for Bernie Sanders? Let's get real about what's most dangerous to the Republic.
Yeah, let's get real. Trump is a threat to the Republic. Who the fuck knows just how compromised our national security is. His loose lips, affinity for dictators, racism, demonization of the press and assault on common decency is far worse than an old social democrat getting elected. His party undercuts any effort to hold him accountable.

You're committed to excusing Trump's behavior, you called Mueller an elitist and ripped apart Romney, meanwhile you designate Trump a tolerable clown. Get it over with and get a MAGA tattoo.

As to how history will view Romney's vote, I'd bet otherwise. Among other reasons, look at your string of adjectives and compare Romney's behavior with Trump's over the past several years--by comparison, Romney looks very good. If Trump looks better than Romney 30 years from now, I'll grieve (admittedly from the next dimension) about what happened to the nation.

There are three basic positions one can have with respect to Trump's impeachment: (i) he did nothing wrong, (ii) what he did was wrong, but he shouldn't be removed from office, and (iii) what he did was wrong, and he should be removed. I think reasonable minds can differ between positions (ii) and (iii), and the dialogue between those two positions can/should be rational and even high-minded. Those ripping on Romney are nearly all in the first camp, however, and in my view deserve little respect as I believe history will prove that that position was demonstrably false.
Yup — I admire any Democrat or Republican who would break from his/her party to do what he/she feels is right!

Do what is right let the consequence follow!!

                  • What Mitt Romney learned from his father

But it was telling that before deciding to vote to convict Trump — a move he described to the Atlantic’s McKay Coppins as "the most difficult decision I have ever had to make in my life” — Mitt Romney studied his father’s favorite verse of Mormon scripture: “Search diligently, pray always, and be believing, and all things shall work together for your good.”

No doubt Romney is right. The abuse that he is about to reap from Trump and his fellow Republicans will be brutal. But the Utah senator said he is at peace with how he will ultimately be judged: “I will tell my children and their children that I did my duty, to the best of my ability, believing that my country expected it of me.”

In leaving this for those who will carry the Romney name forward, he was just passing along the legacy his father left him.

                    • Mitt Romney’s act of bravery changed nothing and changed everything

I was one of the few in the gallery when Romney took the floor at 2 p.m. “I swore an oath before God to exercise impartial justice,” he said to a nearly empty chamber. “I am profoundly religious. My faith is at the heart of who I am.”

Then Romney, on the verge of tears, paused for a full 12 seconds to pull himself together. This was no ordinary speech. Reporters stampeded into the gallery.

                      . . . . . . . . . .

Romney’s act of bravery — and perhaps political suicide — changed nothing and it changed everything. Trump stood no chance of being removed either way. But here was the Republicans’ 2012 presidential nominee, rebuking his craven colleagues who saw Trump’s guilt but wouldn’t risk their careers. Romney made the vote to remove Trump bipartisan (no Democrats sided with Trump), and in the process made himself a pariah in his party.

But for Romney there was something higher than partisan tribalism.

                      . . . . . . . . . .

“Future generations of Americans who look at the record of this trial,” Romney said earlier on the floor, “will note merely that I was among the senators who determined that what the president did was wrong, grievously wrong. We are all footnotes at best in the annals of history.”

On Wednesday, Romney lit a single candle. But as long as there is a Flake, or a Corker, or a McCain, or a Romney, there is still hope.

                      • I'm good with how Mitt voted and I'm good with his explanation - for the most part. I'll vote for him again - I guess we'll see how the rest of Utah feels about him when it's time.

My only cringe was during his explanation talking about the Bidens. I don't care about the Bidens and whether what they did is legal or illegal. It has no bearing in any of this. I thought it was dumb to on the one hand say that Trump can be convicted even if he hasn't done anything illegal, and then follow that up with saying that what the Biden's did probably isn't great, but it isn't illegal, so it's all OK.

Now - let me be clear. I'm not saying the Bidens are dirty and because of that Trump is justified in whatever he did to investigate them. I'm saying it's dumb to on the one hand say that the Bidens are OK because what they did wasn't illegal and then follow that up by saying that even though what Trump did wasn't illegal, he should have consequences. Just leave whether the Bidens are innocent or guilty of something out of that. It doesn't matter. Trump shouldn't be in trouble because the Bidens are clean or dirty. He should be in trouble for how he went about investigating a political rival.

But they weren't dirty. This is manufactured conspiratorial shit. No one bats an eye when a politically connected person gets put on some company's board. This was bullshit from the start, an actual nothing-burger. The Bidens were only scrutinized because Joe was Trump's political rival.

Educate us, how is Joe Biden dirty as hell? I'm curious to hear how he's so distinctly corrupt and craven.
