While we are out there delivering salt lick to lonely herds living the ol code of the West we will let the rest of your department store cowboys hunt and attend vain country music festivals. We got chores to do.

Touchy much? I didn't say hunters love to kill (although your comment about the enjoyment of shooting a deer suggested you like to kill them). Hunting is a sport, and animals are meant to eat. I don't like to eat them, and dislike killing things, so I choose not to hunt. I wasn't judging you. The Mormon persecution complex must be genetic.

No shit. I can still remember the day we moved out of our house on Fred Street in Simi up to Mason Ct in the Knob Hill Subdivision. Our new house had carpet and not just on the ground floor! I thought I had become a white George Jefferson! I could look those gawdless Lancers and Panthers in the eye as we would kick their ass.

As for the Warriors and their valet parking at Westlake High, seriously pounding their privileged asses was pure pleasure. My sophomore year (1988) when Simi was sporting Don McClean, Shaun Delaitre (whose father Larry played at the BYU under legendary coach Stan Watts) and Boocher Hawking while the Warriors had Kevin Logan and some other marginal D1 prospect whose name I cannot remember- the busses out of Simi got delayed. The Soph game when to double overtime and with the delayed busses and OT we were finishing it up in front of the varsity crowd which probably was about 4-5 thousand folks. Westlake fans knew it was their only real chance of a win as in those days the mighty Pioneers were rolling through Marmonte League play without much resistance at any of the 3 levels (soph, jv and varsity). The opposing PG was some wealthy Muslim kid named Isaam Ibrahim. He had gotten cocky when it looked like the Warriors had sure victory as they were leading us by about 9 with a couple of minutes left in regulation. Needless to say they choked and when the game ended I was clapping as I made my way to a teary eyed Ibrahim to rub it in. The Westlake Soph coach got me in a headlock shrilling to "get out of my players face!" until our star player gave him the old Smoke-EH "you got knocked the fuck out!" leaving him sprawled across the court. Bedlam ensued, well as much bedlam as one can get at the gym of upper middle class kids who have valet parking. Our star player was trying to climb up the chain link fencing along the side of the bleachers, that keeps kids from wandering underneath, to get at the Warrior faithful throwing their drinks on us as we went to the locker room. It has been almost 30 years and as you can tell that is one of most vivid HS memories. Sadly, I understand the Marmonte Conference no longer has the Pioneers and Highlanders in it. Coastal Canyon Conference or something with the Pioneers with Oak Park, Moorpark and maybee Calabassas or something? Back in my day all of those schools were tiny 1A schools. It is odd how much things change. I felt like such a victim when we got our police escorts in and out anytime we played at Channel Islands High.

Ha. Not sure you and creekster are the best ones to comment on touchiness.

I see well-meaning folks with bleeding hearts express fundamental misunderstandings of hunting on social media all the time. I never comment. I just thought it was odd (and kind of funny) to see our beloved cattle baron exhibit similar squeamishness.

But if someone doesn't like to hunt, I am 100% OK with that. One less person on the mountain!

Beautiful. No valet parking at Westlake now. Most of the crazy money moved to Oaks Christian two blocks away and now pay 35k per year for a private education that is ranked lower than Westlake. All of this so they could say they went to school with the Paulina Gretsky.

At the risk of ruining some of the clearly overblown opinions of my manliness here, I don't hunt because I hate to kill things. I know I'm a walking contradiction as a cattle rancher, but just the other day I shot a mangy fox staggering through the yard and it made me kind of sad. Coyotes and wolves are the only exception; after seeing what they do to cattle, I'm fine with killing them.
Yea, I am with cowboy on this... maybe it comes from my rural Idaho upbringing on a cattle ranch. I stopped hunting many, many years ago but when it comes to coyotes I will shoot the hell out of them and throw them in the fire. And I don't care if they suffer in the process. I guess I have seen too many cattle killed by those SoBs. I guess this is why I still have I have scary looking rifles with suppressors and fancy scopes, and a good selection of handguns. Also, I am also open to the occasional wild hog hunt. Those basturds make a mess of farmers' fields and deserve to die as well. But when it comes to deer and other God's sweet creatures they have done nothing to me so I let them be. I can't believe JL finds enjoyment hunting down and killing those wonderful animals.

Didn't BYU have some highly touted LB from Oaks Christian who sucked at fistfighting? Private school, indeed!

                        • Deer are about the dumbest animals out there. I hit one with my car in high school, I've been in the car twice when my mom has hit them, and I've had several other close calls.

Though I've never hunted them, I have no problem with and very much encourage the deer hunt.

Indeed. Who can forget that talk when SWK shared the story of throwing a half-dead coyote in the fire?

Don't tell me I can't comment on touchiness! I'm an expert at being touchy! (Speaking strictly of the non-physical touchy and not the physical, creepy uncle touchy)

I'm actually pro hunting as long as other people do it. Our ecosystem has evolved to require hunting to keep a healthy population, and it's certainly more humane to shoot something than let it starve.

I was originally just making a confession that I don't hunt, which is decidedly un-cowboy. I hate the meat and don't have any desire to kill something for the hell of it. No bleeding heart here.
