Hells going on over at the Hunty? Complete fiasco at the U.

Wow. Acclaimed researcher Mary Beckerle fired as CEO and Director of the Huntsman Cancer Institute. After 11 years. With no reason given. By email.

Huge backlash that is rumbling throughout every political avenue at the U. And no one is being muted or restrained on this issue.

Family patriarch Jon Huntsman Sr. called it a "power grab" by Sr VP Vivian Lee. He said Tuesday he would not accept the change, adding that he'll make sure Beckerle is back in charge "one way or another." His wife, Karen Huntsman, called the move "a hostile takeover. ... This is just the beginning, the war."

And here is the faculty and staff:

And very poor handling on the entire situation by the U's Ed Clark, chairman of University of Utah Health Care's pediatrics department, who was picked to come out and face the pitchforks. He started out by saying smugly to the crowd that yes indeed, change is hard for some people to deal with, and ended up calling the protestors "children."

Bruce Edgar, UU oncological professor: "How do you expect to be able to recruit a world-class cancer center director after firing the best one in the country? And doing it by a coup mechanism worse than what we saw this week in Turkey?"

No matter how many online petitions are filled out, and how many angry press interviews are given by the Huntsman guy in charge of the Huntsman Foundation, Beckerle is gone. Word rippled through the national cancer research community, and administrators all over the country if not the world are sharpening their pencils with offers for her, now that they know she is available. There is no way she will want to stay with Utah.

I had a conversation about 6 months ago about something at the U, and in passing, the guy remarked that he had never seen such a lust for power as he did in Vivian Lee. He didn't mean it in a negative way back then, but I bet he is singing a different tune today.

Come to the HCI, cancer researchers! Here you will find the best facilities in the world, and spend half of your time politicking to make sure you don't lose your job!

The Huntsmans own the bully pulpit on this (The Trib) and they are going to town. Who pisses off one of the largest donors in the world? Who alienates the family that gave the HCI almost no interference save the instruction to "cure cancer?" Who broke 25 years worth of agreements between the Huntsman Family and the University of Utah?

It will interesting to watch this play out. The email apparently indicated that the BOT was on board as well with the ouster. I wonder if the Board of Regents will have anything to say.

You can't believe anything the biased SLTrib has to say so I went over to the Deseret News:

But Huntsman criticized both Pershing and Lee, saying the firing was personal on Lee's part. He said Lee was motivated by her jealousy of Beckerle while Pershing "has given (Lee) full reign and not been on top of it at all."

He also called Lee "a very vicious, vitriolic woman."

"The left hand and the right hand at the University of Utah just doesn't know what's going on," he told the Deseret News. "It's just so pathetic to watch them operate."

Sounds like a huge cat fight between Beckerle and Lee to me.

Huntsman also characterized the university's firing of Beckerle as "a terrible, terrible thing they've done to our family" and "far, far, far removed from anything we've ever seen at any cancer hospital anywhere."

During his world travels and business dealings, Huntsman told the Deseret News, he has never seen unethical behavior to the extent that he has with current university administrators.

"We've never had anyone ... ever, ever act with this type of immaturity and dishonesty, ever," he said. "So it's new to us. We play by the rules, live by the rules."
Has Huntsman been blind to the UofU all this time? They should just take their money elsewhere. The U is obviously a house of cards and a bad investment.

This is one of the most amazing local news events during my lifetime. Get the popcorn because this is going to play out on center stage. It's unbelievable that it went down like this.

Huh? Not one word about the Dumpsman Center? Huntsman has his priorities all screwed up.
            Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

This should surprise no one. From my perspective, HCI is the U's crown jewel, and they find a way to fuck it up.

The University of Utah is the warp core of our state's economic, scientific, artistic and creative endeavors. Nothing else comes close.

It is more than a member of the state. They are active in that they participate in the state's programs. It is likely that they hold some sort of responsibility within the state, be it as a voter or as representative. Basically, any one who believes in the state's mission and purpose is an Active Utahn.
