  • Ms. Sanford's reaction is interesting

Sanford's wife's reaction seems to be a departure from tradition. No standing by her man. She's not throwing him to the wolves, but she's saying, "His career is his business; I don't care; que sera sera [as they say in Argentina]."

Is this good or bad for the fate of the free word? Thoughts? I feel refreshed, strangely uplifted by this. Is this feeling unrighteous?
When a true genius appears, you can know him by this sign: that all the dunces are in a confederacy against him.

That you have no idea if your feeling is unrighteous explains a lot.

I like it as well. She hasn't completely dismissed reconciliation, but isn't delusional that things can go on as if nothing happened.

I'm not sure that an obviously bitter marriage fight being done through p.r. reps is necessarily a step forward for the free word. I think that her symbolically not standing by her husband in his meandering press conference was enough of a public message. Leave the rest for when you get your divorce attorneys together.

I like how she's handling this, as it demonstrates (to me anyway) that she is not in the marriage as a showpiece for his political career.

Given that she had hoped he was somewhere on the Appalachian Trail when he was really in Argentina, her reaction seems appropriate. The relationship with Ms. Chapur seems to have left the guy totally unhinged. Better to let him figure it out before moving forward. In the mean time, she has four boys to raise.

            Good for her.

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

This seems like a perfect situation for polygamy to resolve. Why we as a society in this age of enlightenment persecute people who may look at marriage differently, I can't figure out.

I know I'm righteous, counselor. But I like to fish for the LDS reaction. It can be a good departure point for discussion.

She's certainly not making an ass out of herself. That can be done if you either stand by your man (see- Larry Craig's wife sitting there with a goofy grin during the Matt Lauer interview) or by seeming like the bitter wife (Elizabeth Edwards).

She leaves the door open for reconcilliation but she makes it clear he has to earn it. At the same time, she lets it be known that she's not going to be embarassed in front of her children and she's not going to let the actions slide. Gov. Sanford's future prospects be damned.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”
