  • Refugee Rights?

Most of these treaties and conventions are new to me (even though they are not NEW), and I am unaware to which the US is a signatory.

It seems odd that a nation state can be forced to grant all these "rights" simply because another nation state wars within itself.
"Guitar groups are on their way out, Mr Epstein."

Upon rejecting the Beatles, Dick Rowe told Brian Epstein of the January 1, 1962 audition for Decca, which signed Brian Poole and the Tremeloes instead.

Are they forced if they agreed to the conditions under which refugees would be granted rights?

Treaty agreed to by predecessors is a breed of compulsion. Something occurring as a result of Nazi and Socialist oppression for Europeans now comes home to roost from another continent and a vastly different culture. There is no upside in the refugee problem. The numbers are massive. The individuals appear to be mostly unskilled, needing everything with no assets, no connections, many hurdles to be integrated. There is no good solution.

Boiled down, it sounds like you ask, "what's in it for us?" Maybe our predecessors thought that at some point we should look beyond our state's interests, and connect on a more basic human level.

Ahh the old Christian convention of "Tell thy neighbor to fuck off"

Nation states act out of self-interest.

What occurred during a world wide war was something quite different, than a regional war. The refuge afforded Europeans were of a similar or related culture with a plethora of skills to contribute the refuge affording nations.

And I do ask that question because people cower at tallying the costs of being "humane." In this world of identity politics, we need to retain the interest for nations. Accepting peoples from an alien culture, with nothing to contribute to our economy, is not a recipe for economic success. And Bill is wont to say, "it's the economy stupid."

You are reading too much into what our predecessors considered. They were dealing with widespread migrations and the economics of it dictated everybody doing a part would lessen the damage to the entirety of Europe. Statists support allowing low skilled, low wage persons in order to increase the ranks to ensure their elected positions are maintained into perpetuity. I never presume good will by any group in power.

The only reason the Geneva Convention works is not because it is the humane thing to do, or nice. It works due to bilateral incentive. You don't kill our POWs and we wont kill yours. It will be interesting to see if this works, as it is clearly not bilateral.

Yeah this is the biggest refugee crisis since WW2 and far and away the middle east is accommodating most of them. And where are you getting that these people are mostly unskilled?
