My son's pre-Kindergarten teacher is from Iran; her name is Mrs. Ghamarian. She's beautifully persian. Also fully westernized in dress and habits. She has two sons, not only fully westernized, but fully Americanized. She's a strict teacher; hard on the boys -- by far the most requested teacher by the parents in my neighborhood where most families have nannies and housekeepers. She has taught the children many Farsi folk songs, how to count to 10 in Farsi, etc. My son loves to go to a a favorite Iranian restaurant b/c he gets to eat food from Mrs. Ghamarian's country. He'll have a connection to Iran forever b/c of Mrs. Ghamarian. When he's my age in a few decades, what will Iran be like? What will America be like?
To the women in Iran who want the freedom Mrs. Ghamarian enjoys, my heart and deepest wishes go out to you.
To the women in Iran who fear the freedom Mrs. Ghamarian enjoys, my heart and deepest wishes go out to you too -- that you will find the religious tolerance in this world that your country at the moment refuses to extend to others.
