My grandparents moved to southern Idaho from Nortern Utah in 1970. Some towns well they did not have there own High Schools. High Schools took in a few towns. Including ones several miles away. Eskdale and High Desert remote 2 kids to a class. But in Idaho most towns have there own high schools. Some small remote towns kids may stay with friends during the week, Elk River and Stanley. Elk River did have its own High School before with 10 to 15 kids, occasionally one in graduating class.
Leadore and Cascade have very small schools, Leadore is fairly remote don,t know about Culdesac. When Hoosiers came out it was largely fictional the movie but inspiration from a true story. School 2a size when Indiana had one classification. That was around the time schools consolidated through rural America.
What I know in Idaho, during the 50's Minidoka County covers about 20 square miles they combined 4 schools, in one, may have hurt rivalries, but I think it damaged the towns that lost there High a Schools. And put school in middle of nowhere.
Eastern Jerome County combined ther school in 50's don,t know much of how towns were effected there two towns seven miles apart, rivals. Wood River valley resort lost Bellevue High School don,t know if Ketchum had there own public high school or not. Bellevue may have been hurt I doubt the north end was though.
Albion kids wound up going to Declo I am sure bitter people there, a town that once had a college now no High School. Brunue and Grand View combined there school and is in middle of towns. Roberts went to Rigby when school burned down.
Some towns within short radius did have people that lived several miles from the town though. Schools have to travel longer for extra curricular activities on school night.
For the most part I think schools that didn,t combine well it's a long time off ain't,t going to happen. I don,t see it happening. Now you can co op and go to neighboring school for activities and classes not offered at local school. Midvale and Cambridge won,t combine but do sports together. Some schools too remote anyway, though there was 90 mile football co op this year. Greenleaf and consolidated Rimrock that didn,t win any game this year.
In Jr High state trying to consolidate schools. Legislatures lost and it didn,t happen. What happened was taxes rose and some expenses such as travel go up.
Some districts have multiple High a Schools Cassia a County does, too remote to combine schools though. Just have more people you can,t please with one district. Also incentive I think if you don,t like local district can easily go to neighboring one and they have to be better. Lots of out of district students in and out of local schools.
Christian and charter schools good deal of 1a schools in some areas. There is a private community school in area too. Any Idahoans see any rural consolidation soon? Or has it gone way of the dinosaurs? I think it has.
Many people will buy home and wonder why they don,t combine school. Don,t they know school situation when they move there? One complaint against it was more drugs, however people don,t use drugs do to school size. There are druggies in small schools too.
I just don,t think you are better educated simply because the school is bigger and rural towns losing High School hurts them big time. Local School had 5 or 6 people in class. Survived consolidation attempts though and is thriving now. Big four letter word in rural communities and won,t happen in too many places any time soon.
