PETA sleeps with the fishes in Seattle

Despite being in existence for over 100 years and drawing over 10 million tourists annually to the city, it seems that Pike's Market in Seattle had managed to miraculously fly under the PETA radar.

That century-long hall pass has now expired. It has recently come to PETA's attention that there is some serious animal cruelty taking place just blocks from SeattleUte's palacial corporate estate. Apparently, it is now unacceptable to watch or enjoy the flying fish show at Pike's Place Fish Market.

Asserting that the practice of lobbing fish above the heads of patrons and tourists at the market and other venues is disrespectful to creatures that already have gone through a lot, an animal rights group is protesting plans to stage a flying-fish exhibition at an upcoming national veterinarians conference in Seattle.
To show the seriousness of the issue, PETA offered to purchase and supply the Fish Market with faux rubber fish for these aerial displays of piscine terror. The offers were declined.

Fishmongers fail to see the fuss.

[they] are bewildered at the notion that their toss -- which they describe as merely the quickest way of getting fish from display cases to the counter -- shows any lack of reverence for a creature that is, after all, their livelihood.

"I mean, the fish are dead," Ridgway said. "The thing is, we're not laughing and making fun of them. . . . It's just Point A to Point B. That's why we do it."
    Oh, the humanity!

PETA has got to be one of the most entertaining advocacy groups going. I'm glad they do what they do, like they do. Seems like they have a very warped sense of humor, which I can appreciate.

Generally speaking, I have found animal rights activists hold some of the most illogical, poorly reasoned positions I've personally encountered.

For example, they claim "animals have rights". So I ask them, what kind of rights? Constitutional rights? Legal rights? Moral rights?

They clearly don't have constitutional rights of any sort. And the activists are trying to get them more legal rights, so they don't have those, either. So that leaves moral rights. But every one of them I've met has emphatically stated or implied that we shouldn't "legislate morality", so why are they trying to do just that?

Oh, and try to engage them as to which animals have rights. A majority of them are primarily concerned about "cute, cuddly" animals. Ugly animals, such as tarantulas, don't seem to be generally entitled to rights.

I've asked a couple of them why they aren't they lobbying for a national speed limit of 15 mph - because think of all the bugs whose lives would be spared if we did so. But apparently bugs don't enjoy the same rights as dolphins or owls. Who decided this? And why? It sure was fun watching them squirm with that little dilemna.

PETA started out as a group with good intentions, but somewhere down the line it was infiltrated with lunatics. Do they not realize that everyone not associated with PETA just laughs at them?

                      An unfortunate yet unavoidable situation.
