  • The curious case of Robert Durst

You have probably seen this name all over the news lately. He is a wealthy Manhattan real estate heir accused of multiple murders. If you are vaguely familiar with the story, but don't know too many details, please do yourself a huge favor and avoid any media or articles about the case until you watch this six-part HBO documentary mini-series:

It is rated 9.1 on IMDB and very deserving of that high rating.

It aired in March of this year. The wife and I watched it over the last 2-3 days. Minds blown. Remember how "The Thin Blue Line" set a new standard for investigative journalism/crime documentaries? This just blew that standard right out of the water. I can't decide if that is a good thing or a bad thing in the long run. In this case I think it was a good thing, but it would be fun to explore and discuss some of these issues.

    Spoiler for spoiler:
What a weird dude -- really can't believe he was acquitted in that Galveston case. And the way he stole a sandwich when he had $38K or whatever in cash in the car. Such a bizarre sociopath.

I watched it all and loved it.

My wife knew how it was going to end but I did not. That entire last episode had me on the edge of my seat like nothing I have experienced on TV. And the way they faded to black and rolled the credits at the end was perfect.

I like this quote from the HBO website:

"I’m hard pressed at the moment to think of a more stunning, breathtaking, Did-That-Just-Happen?/That-did-NOT-just-happen! finish in my TV viewing life," said Jeff Jensen in Entertainment Weekly, who also anointed Durst the "Yellow King of 2015." "If every great yarn requires a compelling protagonist and an even better antagonist, Robert Durst, an anti-hero for the ages, satisfied the demands of both parts very well."

An HBO subscription is required to legally watch this, right?

I'll be honest, Jarecki bothered me a bit. Probably my aversion to his facial hair and questionable sartorial choices.

One of these day, I.J. Reilly, I want to hear the story behind your avatar. I'm guessing there's a worthy thread in there somewhere.

            Sorry for the threadjack.

It's a headshot I took for my business website. Granted it's a little dated, but it's more-or-less what I look like.

I had a series of dictators/totalitarians/strongmen as my avatar for some time when I was more active on the board. With my declining activity I haven't switched it out for some time and have therefore been stuck on Mugabe for a couple of years. They are the "Confederacy of Dunces" from which my screen name derives.
