This is time to avoid winter sports. The BYU student that was face down then died in the hospital. Some snow accidently got dumped on her trying to get her out. Probably had no effect though. The last few years in neighboring towns two men with young families lost there lives snowmobiling because they were caught in avalanches. Happens when the snow starts to melt. There are avalanche beacons. This time probably not best time for snow machining or winter sports unless you have an avalance beacon. My snowmobiling has been for the most part in open fields. Not something I done a whole lot in mountains.

My plan was to head off with friends to the back country this weekend. Even though all of us are experienced and use the proper equipment it's not going to happen. ( Due to a couple of surgeries I haven't skied in two seasons so this really pisses me off. Probably for the best because I'm still not in the shape I'd like to be. )
Beacon or not hitting the back country at this time is a really bad idea.

What is scary about this one is that the BYU student was hardly in the back country. Tibble Fork is a really popular sledding / tubing / snow showing, etc. area. We've been right where they were many times."It's true that everything happens for a reason. Just remember that sometimes that reason is that you did something really, really, stupid."

Yeah, if it's near the reservoir, we sledded there many times in college. Awesome sledding, and not really someplace I would give second thought about avalanche danger to.Originally posted by FMCoug View PostWhat is scary about this one is that the BYU student was hardly in the back country. Me too. Did a overnight winter camp there in 1972. Built snow shelters, and tubed the whole next day.Originally posted by Sizzle View PostYeah, if it's near the reservoir, we sledded there many times in college.
