I did note that on our trip back, Shasta Lake seemed higher than what it was a couple of years ago when we drove by it last. So by my rigorous scientific observations, I would say yes.

We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

In a breathtaking shift for a state that had been mired in five years of punishing drought, 25 feet of new snow has fallen on Heavenly ski resort in South Lake Tahoe since New Year’s Day.
At 177 percent of average now, the Sierra snowpack is the biggest since it reached 207 percent on Feb. 1, 1995, according to state records. Since 1950, that year was the third largest snowpack, behind 1952, when it was 267 percent and 1969, when it was 230 percent, on Feb. 1.

This year, the Sierra snowpack so far ranks seventh.
My boss is headed to Tahoe next week. I would go too if I could.

And more to come this weekend. Expecting 4-6 feet today through Sunday in the Northern Sierra and Southern Cascades.

We may have to change the title of this to "The Official Flooding Thread" in the spring.

Channel 5 indicated Alta has the most snow depth in 52 years. I can't remember what they were saying about water content and cold temperatures exactly, but they were using terms such as not in 4 and 8 years. More evidence climate change is real.

I have been visiting Northern Cal this week... I am happy to report their drought is over:

                  • The Butte County Sheriff’ Office released the following statement on Facebook:

                    This is an evacuation order.

Immediate evacuation from the low levels of Oroville and areas downstream is ordered.

A hazardous situation is developing with the Oroville Dam auxiliary spillway. Operation of the auxiliary spillway has lead to severe erosion that could lead to a failure of the structure. Failure of the auxiliary spillway structure will result in an uncontrolled release of flood waters from Lake Oroville. In response to this developing situation, DWR is increasing water releases to 100,000 cubic feet per second.

Immediate evacuation from the low levels of Oroville and areas downstream is ordered.

                      What!!??!!!

They have been saying all weekend, "it's fine. the situation here is fine." If that thing goes and people die, the state is eff'd.

It's only 2nd largest reservoir in California so it may not be that bad.

It's pretty crazy how things have transpired this week. On Friday they assured everyone that everything was fine. Yet, they cancelled school throughout most of Oroville on Friday, based on inclement weather when there wasn't a cloud in the sky anywhere.

                              • So they've been dumping water like crazy over the main, damaged spillway (that I shared pictures of on Friday) to try to rapidly lower the lake level.

It has been about 3 hours since the evacuation orders went into effect. The lake level has lowered over a foot and is now only about 6 inches above the emergency spillway that had developed a hole in it.

Once the lake level drops below the emergency spillway level the threat of catastrophic failure will be much better. They are taking about bringing large boulders and rocks by helicopter to try to plug the hole in the emergency spillway. If that doesn't work they may bring a bunch of schoolchildren in to plug the holes in the dam with their fingers, I guess.

The main spillway is getting blasted by 100,000 CFS of water right now. I can't imagine what condition it is going to be in once they can finally back off on the flow rate and inspect the thing.
