I took your challenge and I see nothing on Cougarboard through the first 3 pages. Did they delete it all? I did learn that Johnny Ragin has left the Cal program.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostAnyone want to venture over to CB and gauge the reaction? I can only imagine...
I stopped by my parents this evening. Both of them are TBM and my father is very conservative who has long lambasted the idea of LGBT rights. I was expecting to get an earful about the end of days. I had to bring it up and then my mom just said "wild huh?" while my dad just said "yeah, I saw that." That was it. Barely caused a stir with them. Surprising but not unwelcome.

Church's statement:
http://www.mormonnewsroom.org/articl...-marriage-ban-Church Statement on Court Ruling Regarding Same-Sex Marriage in Utah
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints issued the following statement Friday after a court ruling on same-sex marriage in Utah:
The Church has been consistent in its support of traditional marriage while teaching that all people should be treated with respect. This ruling by a district court will work its way through the judicial process. We continue to believe that voters in Utah did the right thing by providing clear direction in the state constitution that marriage should be between a man and a woman and we are hopeful that this view will be validated by a higher court."If there is one thing I am, it's always right." -Ted Nugent.

While I still am not a supporter of gay marriage, I don't really care if gays get to marry in Utah. There are many more threats to the family than this. It does bother me that some federal judge make a decision this important for a state. It bothers me far more they have that power than the decision itself. Heck, given time the electorate in this state probably would have voted to allow gay marriage.

We believe that all people should be treated with respect. [But not enough respect to allow them to get married. Let's not get carried away here.].Originally posted by Uncle Ted View Post

I think my words were "this important". Yes, I know that is the system. I think I can disagree with such a system though. Do you think there is anything a state does that "a" federal judge can't decide they can disallowOriginally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostJudges should only make unimportant decisions?

You realize that by "the system", you mean the US constitution, right?Originally posted by byu71 View PostI think my words were "this important". Yes, I know that is the system. Shelby used to work for Hatch. Not surprised that Shelby came down this way, even though I think much of his reasoning is wrong. Shelby is just another result of Hatch's political patronage program, where personal relationship is more important than qualifications or judicial philosophy. Make no mistake about it, this decision was more about the judge's personal opinion than applying the constitution. Not the first time that has happened, but pretty shocking when it comes from a guy that was hand-picked by someone who supposedly represents a state whose citizens strongly oppose gay marriage.Originally posted by Color Me Badd Fan View PostRobert Shelby, the federal judge on this matter, was just confirmed last year by the Senate. The common practice at the District level is for a Senator of the state to recommend someone to the president. Orin Hatch recommended Shelby to the Obama Administration.

I'm not sure if the administration cared very much about who occupied the vacancy at the Utah Federal District level. I knew the daughter of Clinton appointee in Utah and she and her father were not politically liberal by any stretch of the imagination. Like Shelby, Hatch had recommended him.
