Don't be so fast to call him crazy. This has been the way the most admired religious people have behaved for ages in the name of religion. LAUte's hero Thomas More wore a camel hair coat everywhere. It's very easy to be an armchair believer ensconced in Alpine with your science learning, isn't it. But all religious people need to understand that people blow up children and self-immolate and obstruct distribution of vaccines in poor countries and murder women and make them cover everything but their eyes in the name of religion. Religion needs to be judged not by the product that is moderated and made somewhat rational by Western secularism (that would be an irony, wouldn't it), but also by its most extreme and crazy manifestations. These manifestations are endemic to the very nature of religion. When a true genius appears, you can know him by this sign: that all the dunces are in a confederacy against him.

I like that line of reasoning. I am going to start judging the University of Utah by its most extreme and crazy alumni.Originally posted by SeattleUte View PostDon't be so fast to call him crazy. He has lost 25 lbs so far. He also suggests that Utah invoke nullification and ignore the judge.

Yes and all political ideology should be judged upon the excesses of the Bolsheviks, Mao, and the fascists. Great argument.Originally posted by SeattleUte View PostDon't be so fast to call him crazy. Had you more data points you may be justified in doing this. How many mass murdurers has the U. of Utah produced? Has this occurred for five-thousand years? Are there departments of the U of U openly encouraging mass murder? Does the U of U preach against vaccines and for misogyny.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostI like that line of reasoning. Whoa. Wait. Are we now back to judging more holistically?Originally posted by SeattleUte View PostHad you more data points you may be justified in doing this. I didn't draw any conclusion about religion. I just said that if we're going to judge holistically let's actually do that in every respect ("Religion needs to be judged not by the product that is moderated and made somewhat rational by Western secularism (that would be an irony, wouldn't it), but also by its most extreme and crazy manifestations"). Closer to home, you need to take account of the Mormon splinter groups and their crimes against women in judgming Mormonism, particularly its forebears, and so on.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostWhoa. Come on man. It's about the founding fathers, not the hundreds of years of amendments and case law since then! Jefferson said so!Originally posted by Sleeping in EQ View PostOr at least his idea of it."It's true that everything happens for a reason. There is no Amendment that was ratified to specifically deal with sexual orientation discrimination. Having said that the courts have been slowly moving in the direction of extending the 14th Amendment to cover sexual orientation. I believe this is wrong and weakens the strength and purpose of having a constitution. Many will claim that I am a bigot for this and that it is only because I am homophobic that I am only now concerned about the Constitution. Nothing could be further from the truth. My brother is gay and I happy attended his wedding. I don't have an issue with states choosing to recognize gay marriage and I believe that if a state is going to recognize any marriages (I wish they wouldn't) then they should include gay marriages as well. Society is moving in that direction. It would only be a matter of time before the majority of states recognized gay marriages. We don't need judges expanding the constitution into something it is not to meet social movements. The gay movement can achieve its goals of equality while showing fidelity to constitution if we just allow the system to work.
Forgive me, but <redacted> intent. Reception is all that matters to me. Intent is a fallacy.
This is not a <redacted> social movement. This is a civil rights movement.

I wonder what his excuse will be when he decides to eat again? It's got to be some loophole he can create to let him eat while also trying to save face. I'm guessing he'll have a vision or personal revelation telling him his efforts were noble but the Lord wants him to continue his fight against SSM and to do that he needs to have energy so he's now allowed to eat. I'll track his FB page so I can see if I'm right as I figure in about 4-5 days he'll crack....or at least his wife (is he married? probably since no good Mormon is unmarried at his age) will force him to eat.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostWow. "Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

If he wants to save face, he should just claim to not know why he started fasting in the beginning, but that the important thing is that he isn't fasting anymore currently.Originally posted by Moliere View PostI wonder what his excuse will be when he decides to eat again?
