Edwards today admitted that the child is his. I don't know what he was thinking when he denied it? How would that lie possibly make him look any better, and it had the potential, as it turned out, to, incredibly, do him even more harm than was already done. This does not seem like a very smart man. He needs to hire I.J. Reilly as his PR consultant.

Cheating on your wife is low (people do that all the time, granted). Cheating on your terminally ill wife is lower.

Denying the kid is yours is perhaps the lowest, if you (as appears to be the case here) know you are lying. What happens to this poor kid at 13 when she finds out that dad didn't want to claim her?

Independently of how I feel about any of Edward's politics, he is #1 on my most hated public figure list.

I read about this this morning and was incredulous about Edward's lack of foresight with this one. Does no one learn? If you have some really bad news that is coming out about you, that is the best time to get out all the bad news. Humans have a large capacity to let the passage of time gloss over bad things, but when your sins come out incrementally all of the old stuff gets put back in the forefront of everyone's mind.

I also saw that John and Elizabeth are currently separated. If she didn't separate when his issues of infidelity first came out (she also apparently knew about the child at, or around, the time) I wonder what would have been the catalyst for the separation. John also bought a house for the mistress and child.

The scariest aspect of his possible presidency was not his low character, but rather his incredible stupidity and hubris that allowed him to believe either that (i) in a country with thousands of investigative journalists, news of his philandering and fatherhood would remain undiscovered, or (ii) the American public wouldn't care. Having a person with such horrifically poor judgment become the nation's commander-in-chief would likely have been a disaster.

The John Edwards snitch has come forward. This was my favorite part of the story:

Eventually, she says, she decided to spill what she knew. She called the National Enquirer.

"I guess ... John Edwards is having an affair," she says she told the tabloid.

The television psychic? the person at the Enquire asked.

No, O'Brien said. The presidential candidate.

"Oh," he said, "OH!"

The Enquirer has broken some legitimate stories, but they still have a hard time getting away from their roots.
