  • Cheney and Powell

seem to have some angst between them. I don't know a great deal about the history but were there conflicts when Powell was COJCS and Cheney was the SecDef? Powell was a spectacular political General but never really reputed to much of a real warrior and hell, I could have looked like Robert E. Lee fighting the greatest military machine in the world's history, as the US Armed forces at the end of the Cold War were arguably the greatest military machine in history. My instinct is that Cheney was probably hawkish to finish off Saddam and Powell, the self-described "cautious General," wanted to take the glory of the 100 hour carnage that was the thunder and lightning of Desert Storm without the threat of a prolonged urban fight to get Saddam.

I used to like Powell until I read his analysis of the Obama popularity leading to his conclusions that American's are desiring the government to provide them goods and services. Powell is a great lieutenant, but I just don't think leading is his thing. I still appreciate the "cautious General" approach but that analysis of the Obama Presidency popularity is dumb, IMO. Obama is a rock star and people who want government services don't want to pay and most sane people, even those who espouse governmental power being applicated to accomplish egaltarian ends, would prefer a vibrant civil society to provide goods and services. Don't Generals have to wait in line at the DMV too?

I'll bet ol meanie Dick couldn't take it to the hole against the ladies like Obama can.....

(yes SoCalCoug feel free to use that last line in your tagline...I'm here for you babe!)

I'm choosing to mostly ignore your fatuity here and instead overwhelm you with so much data that you'll maybe, just maybe, realize that you have reams to read on this subject before you can contribute meaningfully to any conversation on this topic.

I don't know, but I've wondered the same thing. They seemed so chummy back during Desert Shield and Desert Storm.

I don't understand how Powell can seem so out of sorts that people take offense to his endorsement of and continued support for Obama. In McCain he had the most progressive Repub in years, as well as a fellow warrior, yet he publically opted for Obama. At some point party affiliation should count for something.

I lost respect for Powell after he left the Bush Administration and portrayed himself as opposing the war, but having done the job of a loyal soldier. What happened to his loyalty? Hell, he was Sec of State. If he had such grave misgivings, he certainly had the opportunity and obligation to make those known. Instead he went and made the case for the war at the U.N. Sec Council.

Which was it? Loyal soldier or silent coward?

But he's got a 70% approval rating and is making gobs of money on the speakers circuit, so that's all that matters.
        Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

I agree. Following Powell's professed ideology, namely a fiscal conservative and social moderate, McCain should have been his soulmate.

For the record, he did not go to West Point. We still got that numbskull McClellan to explain and the dude who lost to John Kerry, bit the "cautious General" is not counted amongst the "Long Gray Line!"

I also think given my druthers I would pick the well hung Dick for a foxhole mate if it were to hit the fan over Collin.

Even with the electrically stimulate ticker, Dick would also be my choice. His daughter is very impressive as well.

Powell had the Presidency for the taking, but was concerned for his crazy wife. No Lincoln, that one.
