  • "Visible minorities"?

Tooblue used this term about a thousand times tonight. Does anyone know where it comes from? I understand it's a term intended to devalue gays' claims to civil liberties. I'm always curious about the uses to which language is put, especially for propaganda. Where does this newspeak come from? Has anyone but tooblue ever used or heard the term?

I've never heard it, but I believe he's pointing out that a minority with darker skin is visible, in the sense that we can see that he's not white. With a few exceptions, there are no visible signs that someone is gay.

Perhaps I'm wrong, but that's what I understood him to be saying.

Yes, I understand he's saying that. Like blacks are five star mnorities, native Americans four and a half star, Asians three star, gays zero stars. Sick.

Agreed, although I have a difficult time understanding gays as minorities. Perhaps it's because all of our lives, we've been told that the single qualification for minority is skin color. Even the phrase "women and minorities" was always said when talking about civil rights, which alluded to the thought that gender is not classified as minority.

I am so grateful to my early Mormon pioneer ancestors who moved to Canada to practice the sacred union of plural marriage. They truly new a tolerant nation when they saw one, and the Canadian benefits continue to bless my life, yea, even unto the fifth and sixth generation.

Please don't bump this thread. I'm sure it's horribly embarrassing to tooblue.
