It was retaliation for the death of his father-in-law, John Singer, who was killed in a standoff with authorities in 1979. This is from the NY Times about the standoff in '88 that led to Swapp's arrest. It gives a little info about what happened in '79. Since he was released in Manti, it make perfect sense to have the reporter drive to the POTM, and stand in front of a prison. For us non Utahns we can't get enough of the self sincere Utah pulpit accent.
There was some wisdom in the widow's voice. She knew a debt needed to be paid, and felt that it was paid deeply enough so that she could put it behind her.Comment

The local bishop of the building that was blown up was a friend of the family. His wife used to go walk around the building with some other ladies in the morning, but for some reason didn't go that day. Things were pretty weird for them for a while - threats and graffiti at their home and at the church. I remember them being a little concerned for their safety.Comment
