nice. For real though, I can see the following GOP candidates:Originally posted by I.J. Reilly View PostButtars for Gov?
Gary Herbert - an easy guess
John Valentine - Not too farfetched
Mark Shurtleff - this will probably ensure that he doesn't give Bennet a primary run
Nolan Karras - may give it another shot after a nice primary run against Huntsman in 2004.

Gary Herbert is the lieutenant governor, which I believe means that he will succeed governor Huntsman.
This makes for interesting ramifications on a national and state level.τὸν ἥλιον ἀνατέλλοντα πλείονες ἢ δυόμενον προσκυνοῦσιν

He'll be acting governor until 2010, where there will be a special election to elect a governor for the remainder of Huntsman's original term.Originally posted by All-American View PostGary Herbert is the lieutenant governor, which I believe means that he will succeed governor Huntsman.

The more I think about it, the cooler this is. The last two Utah governors have cut their terms short to accept executive appointments. Leavitt with the EPA then with HHS and now Huntsman.
Granted, the only other China ambassador I could name would be GHWB, but the profile and party of Huntsman elevates the appointment considerably.

Good move by Obama. Huntsman seems to have a natural affinity for China, and of course has the background. I bet it will be a real benefit to the state of Utah.
Do you think that any of the congressional delegation will throw their hat in the ring?

Bishop would be the only one, but I don't see it. He has a nice committee spot on armed services and is throwing a lot of money at HAFB. If the GOP takes over in the next four years then he'll be sitting in a very good spot. Chaffetz is too young in his career and Matheson has too much to lose.Originally posted by New Mexican Disaster View PostDo you think that any of the congressional delegation will throw their hat in the ring?

I do.Originally posted by New Mexican Disaster View PostDo you think that the Cannon's would be foolish enough to waste some money on a run?
My concern would be that Cannon would make a good enough run that would encourage him to try again."Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance and the gospel of envy; its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." - Winston Churchill

I think Matheson would actually be the first really viable Dem for gov in a really long time. His status as a "blue dog" would help ease the fears of some in Utah county and he can obviously pick up SL county area. I don't think he would do it though. He has a fairly comfortable seat in the House at the moment.Originally posted by YOhio View PostBishop would be the only one, but I don't see it. I don't think he can afford it. He had a really hard time raising money and his campaign still owes him money from the last two elections. He's lost a lot of money and isn't worth what he was when he originally ran.Originally posted by New Mexican Disaster View PostDo you think that the Cannon's would be foolish enough to waste some money on a run?

He can help Utah more as a Dem in this current Congress than he could as governor. He could definitely win, but it would be a fierce battle and he wouldn't gain much.Originally posted by I.J.
