  • Hipsters on Food Stamps

    http://thelastpsychiatrist.com/2012/...od_stamps.html

This is an epic screed about hipsters on food stamps and the scam that higher education has pulled on growing mass of young adults saddled with massive student loan debt.

Anything that can also include a psychological take on reactions to the infamous Alec Baldwin "Coffee is for Closers" clip from Glengarry Glen Ross is also worth reading.

This is a long piece, so sit down and read when you have quite a bit of time on your hands. A lot of it is hard to follow and seems like a stream of consciousness, so be forewarned.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

Spun through Part 1 (of 3), good read so far. Thank you. The article reminded me of a favorite "cartoon" on xkcd:

That would be a good name for a band.

TRU DAT. I spent 9 years of college getting 2 degrees in music. Now I work with mainframes doing better than some professors. Go figure.

"Imagine a large corporate machine mobilized to get you to buy something you don't need at a tremendously inflated cost, complete with advertising, marketing, and branding that says you're not hip if you don't have one, but when you get one you discover it's of poor quality and obsolete in ten months. That's a BA."

Also... RealTall did you see this (from a NY Times article referenced in Part 3)?
"The hipster haunts every city street and university town. Manifesting a nostalgia for times he never lived himself, this contemporary urban harlequin appropriates outmoded fashions (the mustache, the tiny shorts), mechanisms (fixed-gear bicycles, portable record players) and hobbies (home brewing, playing trombone)."

Two BA's and a trombonist? You need to change your title from "Trombonist-In-Chief" to "Hipster-In-Chief"!

I'll have to consider that. I sort of like the sound of it.

I don't have 2 BAs, I have a Bachelor of Music Education(which is most decidedly NOT a BA) and a MM, Master of Music in performance. But don't tell anybody.

If you can explain why the title was chosen, I would appreciate it. I happen to own that very same product and am feeling a bit insecure about the purchase now.

                  EDIT: "projection" ... n/m.
