  • Boy Scouts reviewing Ban on Guns...

Well, they're not, but they should:

Except for law enforcement officers required to carry firearms within their jurisdiction, firearms shall not be brought on camping, hiking, backpacking, or other Scouting activities except those specifically planned for target shooting under the supervision of a currently certified BSA national shooting sports director or National Rifle Association firearms instructor.
So if no shooting activity is planned or no certified instructor is coming along there are no weapons? Not even for self defense?

I sometimes take a gun on scouting activities that may or may not include target shooting. It depends on where we may be going. Yes, I am certified.

I think it's a great idea to take a group of kids into the back country of Wyoming without a gun. Maybe they should smother themselves in chum before the go, just for good measure.

We had three handguns on high adventure last year but we also have no shortage of certified instructors (this is Texas you know). Frankly I'd trust a 14 year old scout carrying a gun over a hypertensioned science teacher.

Yeah, right? We never went anywhere as scouts without packing. Sometimes a few of the scouts were too.

Does the Wyoming back country include the Cloud Peak Wilderness area in the Big Horn National Forest? Backpacking CPW sans gun is one place I feel relatively secure because of the scarceness of bears and mountain lions. Dunno, I don't live there just visit on occasion. Maybe all the bears and mountail lions confine themselves to private property or Boy Scout campgrounds.

We were under bear alert all last summer on the Big Horns. Hanging food away from camp, sleeping in solid structures when possible, packing heat and/or bear spray in the back country, the whole nine yards. During a scout camping trip in June, one of our leaders slept outside of a tent and woke up to find fresh lion tracks circling his bedroll twice. Not sure what scared the lion off, but that was one lucky camper.

Yikes. Last time I looked, there were few Park Service reports of bear-man encounters in CPW and no mountain lion sightings. My wife is convinced I'm going to be eaten by bears or mountain lions on one of my excursions. Maybe she's on to something. Will probably will think twice before going off-trail now.

Go off trail all you want. If you're supposed to die at the jaws of a bear or mountain lion you're going to die at the jaws of a bear or a mountain lion if you're off trail or in the middle of a large metropolitan area.

I have taken guns on scout outings several times. I am not certified.

On one campout my .38 pistol saved the life of two scouts.

But....but....but....handguns are made to kill people, not save lives.
