Under terms of the law, existing restaurants may remove the curtain but newly built restaurants will be forced to prepare drinks in a back room, out of the view of customers. Huntsman has called such a move "a step backward."

Several small activist groups as well as potential gubernatorial candidate Sen. John Valentine, R-Orem, said the back rooms are necessary so children aren't enticed to drink alcohol.

The Utah Restaurant Association said the new rules create an unlevel playing field for new restaurants and warn that many national chains might refuse to come to the state as a result.

Huntsman has promised to revisit the issue.

I have never been enticed to drink because I saw someone making a drink. What a stupid argument.

You visit the wrong establishments when you come to Vegas.

There was an article about this a while back. It had a quote from some mullah mom from Utah County saying the cherries, etc. looked enticing to kids and they would say they want one ... which she apparently believes lead to alcoholism.

Yeah, those bartenders at Yellowtail in the Bellagio were pretty enticing last week.

As Lingo pointed out multiple times today, correlation does not prove causation. (I love when someone learns a new phrase and wants to show it off) So kids there is no way to prove that not seeing the drinks being made will have any effect on Provo teens drinking watered down beer.

My personal favorite is the recent law prohibiting the sale of flavored beer anywhere but the state liquor store. The reason behind the move? It tastes too good and kids call it "alcopop". We have truly moronic state legislators.

In regards to the back room drink mixing - It doesn't really matter where the drink is mixed. The server won't serve the drink if you are underage.

We had a thread a while ago about a dad that went inactive and started drinking in front of the family. Even the non members here agreed that at the very least, he shouldn't drink around the kids.

Does that episode shed any light on this one?

I didn't agree on that. Drinking in moderation around the kids is being a good role model. Getting plastered around the kids is being a poor role model.

Point taken. Statement is amended to read "Even some of the nonmembers".

Never underestimate the seductive power of alcohol.

Now, Apu, Mrs. Simpson claims that she *forgot* that bottle of... delicious... bourbon. Brownest of the brown liquors... so tempting. What's that? You want me to drink you? But I'm in the middle of a trial!

I think the main issue was that drinking at home upset that guy's LDS wife, not that nobody should drink alcohol in front of kids.

I think the rules, laws, etc. are set to govern or control the very weekest amongst us. Of course the national government has less control over being able to set laws to control the weakest amongst us.

State governments can set stricter conrols based on the makeup of their state and what the national government will allow.

The churches of course can set even stricter controls to manage the weakest amongst them. The only entity with even more power to control the "weak" than the churches would be BYU.
