I think there is little question that gun ownership is romanticized in our country in a way that it is probably nowhere else. If someone carried a crossbow or a tomahawk with them at all times for protection I would think that was pretty damn weird. But the rationale really isn't any different.

That is the beauty of a handgun. Comfortable and concealed.

      But I don't own one.

I guess guns are on everyone's mind right now. My point wasn't about the gun, it could have been he was arrested for having the wrong kind of flowers in the Country.

My point is, it is a very sad situation that appears the guy thought he was doing nothing wrong, the Mexican military has said the gun or flowers were not on the banned list and yet he has been in jail since August.

He could have been a liberal with long hair and a tatoo on his forehead with no belief in God and I would still think the situation was unjust.

I will admit the fact he is an American does make me more interested in the story than if he had been Canadian. Sorry, I haven't quite become a citizen of the world first like many of the "enlightened" folks on the board. Might be the age.

For sure and no doubt they are treating him worse than a some of other foreigner would be for that crime. He might be a bit of a bargaining chip or they want to use him as an example.
To the gun thing, back in early America you couldn't walk around with guns or axes for that matter in crowded public spaces because it scared people. It was called "frighting". Here in Utah I can legally march around schools with an AK 47. The shitebirds in the legislature said it could be an opportunity to educate the kids. We also have an official state gun. I'm wondering when we will have a state condom or hand grenade.

I don't know what the answer is. I do consider myself a decent person and those I associate with in this office and on the golf course I also know to be good decent people.

This talk and emotion, understandably, right now has pushed a bunch of us over an edge we weren't at. I now know 7 of my friends, including myself, who are going to go get permits to carry.

After I get my permit and have my boys help buy a few guns, I really don't care if they pass stricter gun laws.

I'm not in favor of banning concealed carry permits. But getting rid of gun free zones to the point where you can walk around schools with machine guns is different. Before I decided I shouldn't own guns (I used to) I thought about getting a permit.
No offense, it doesn't make me feel safer knowing you'll be armed but it causes me zero worry.

There was a Texas truck driver imprisoned in Mexico for 7 months after his GPS malfunctioned and he ended up in Mexico with a load of ammunition. Per the story, he was on a one-way when he got to the border and the US custom agent recommend he enter Mexico and do a U-turn.

In my view, these situations are Mexico taking political prisoners. The US wants a corrupt system to crack down on drug trafficking. Mexico wants the US to crack down on gun trafficking.

I understand. I was running off on a tangent.

I know we should be discussing this in another thread, but does anyone really believe this would happen? Do regular civilians carry around machine guns or even rifles everywhere they're allowed? All getting rid of the gun free zones would do is decriminalize carrying a firearm in those areas, it doesn't mean there will be a bunch of loons brandishing M60s.

As for removing it from schools what they could do is modify the law so that in order to carry a firearm in a school you must have a valid CCW permit. Even though it tramples somewhat on states' rights, I would even be in favor of the federal government requiring that the training to get a CCW is more robust and that it require more range work and even some simulated crisis scenarios so that those who are carrying will be more of an asset than a liability (though I don't consider them a liability now).

bingo. utah ccw training is an absolute joke. someone can sit and listen to a west valley cop who is trying to make some extra coin for christmas read powerpoint slides for 90 minutes and is all of a sudden qualified to shove a loaded .45 down their pants?

Sure the black panthers used to carry shotguns everywhere to intimidate people. Even in the state Capitol in Sacto. This led Reagan to tighten gun laws. I can certainly see people doing this kind of dumb stuff.

They were militant group making a political statement. It wasn't the norm, and it likely wouldn't return to being such, especially in schools.

Even so, I think they could modify the law so that the gun free zones are now just gun restricted zones where concealed carry is allowed, but not open carry.

I could live with them being gun-restricted zones. Don't underestimate people's ability to be jackasses.
