    Have you heard about the Marine in jail

    in Mexico. He has served in Iraq and Afghanistan. In a nutshell he registered an antique gun at the border. When he took it across the border he was arrested for having a banned gun. He was thrown in jail and his parents were called and told to send money. This was August. So far our government has been insturmental in getting him moved to a part of the jail where he is less likely to get killed.

    Fox is all over this, but I haven't heard CNN talk about it. I don't watch MSNBC or the network news so I don't know if they have said anything about it.

    Where is the outrage? Why hasn't Hillary or the President made a call and told the Mexicans we want him out of there?

    I don't plan on ever stepping a foot in Mexico. I think Americans should cancel any travel plans to Mexico until this Marine is back on US soil.

    I will be happy to hear from someone who knows something I don't know or just thinks it is tough luck for him, but we shouldn't be making any demands.

      As a kid, whenever we would go to Canada, my dad would take his pistol and hide it in some random bush off the beaten path, just outside the border. Sometimes we'd be in Canada for days, when we returned, we would go pick it up, it would always be there and we would be on our way. He's a strange dude, but like many weird things he did and does, they seem to work for him.

        I think I said he registered or whatever they do on our side of the border. He told the authorities on the other side he had it. He was on his way to some country south of Mexico on a hunting trip.

        Perhaps you have information I haven't seen or heard and could share.

          I'm pretty sure the desire to own a gun is somehow related to the lawless, wild west. Maybe it is passed down from generation to generation (like religion) even though the days of the wild west are over.

          I am a Mormon because my dad is a Mormon. He is a Mormon because his dad was Mormon, and so on until 1832 when the first member of my family joined the Church. He joined the Church because a girl wouldn't marry him unless he did.

          As far as I can tell, none of my ancestors carried guns. That's probably why our family is gunless.

            My dad never owned guns. I've owned several. But he was a Mormon, and so am I, so maybe you're right.

              So you're a convert to gun ownership. The philosophy might be as important as anything. What was his philosophy on guns?

                Interesting. It seems like my dad had a handgun with him 24/7, yet I can't think of one good reason to even own a handgun, much less ever actually take one with me anywhere. Yep, Sooner must be right.

                  SeattleUte's dad was an active Mormon. Of course there are exceptions. But overall, this stuff is passed on from generation to generation.

                  Why else is the child of a Mormon automatically labeled as a Mormon child even before they have had a chance to learn and grow and make decisions on their own? The same goes for a child of a catholic or a child of a muslim. They are automatically named by the religion of the parent.

                  I think the same goes for all kinds of philosophies. Children pick up on things that their parents do. Although there are always situations where children are converted to new philosophies. the parent's faith is the single most important factor in determining religion of the child. It's not really different in politics either. Even today there are democrat families in Utah who are democrats simply because their ancestors were assigned to be democrats by the Church.

                        Byu71, how do you not know the state department hasn't been pushing for his release? I want to see him free. And as much as people hate Obama I'd guess he does too.
                        It is very very foolish to take a gun or even a single bullet into Mexico. It is also insane to drive into Mexico right now to go hunting in Guatemala or God knows where ever else he was headed. Corrupt cops, cartels, Zapatistas, yeah not wise. I think I read the jail where is held is under Cartel control. It is bad and complicated situation. It is premature to make this partisan.

Senator Ben Nelson, D, was on O'Reilly tonight and seems to be doing all he can to get something done. He said he is very optimistic something will get done. I have been watching this on O'Reilly and Greta and I doubt they would go off if the guy really did something wrong, they would have egg all over their faces.

                          I would be terribly upset if it was Bush and Condoleza Rice that hadn't got anything done. Nelson said the President has had a lot on his plate, OK.

                          Maybe not the smartest thing to do, but if the guy checked in with the folks on our side of the border and they didn't tell him he was dumb, maybe he was unsuspecting, but I wouldn't call a Marine who served in both Iraq and Afghanistan a dumbass even if I thought he made a dumb move. You didn't I know. I just have too much respect for our military to call one, especially in this circumstance, a dumbass.

                            even if he wasn't a Marine I'd want him out of there. I'm sure the parents are pissed and they should be screaming and keeping this in the press as much as they can. I don't know if they should make enemies of the administration though. The president does have tons on his plate with the fiscal cliff stuff. I didn't vote for Obama and I certainly won't argue over his defense policy but he is pretty damn pro-veteran. I also remember Beck and Drudge criticizing him when he ordered the Somali pirates shot. Just like Bush, he won't be able to win. The country is divided in an almost silly fashion.

                              I'll tell you this, I'd rather have Hillary on the case than John Bolton. Mexico has made progress and avoided collapsing but the cartels are scary and we do have some sort of truce with them which is the violence largely stops at the border. Unfortunately, they have the organization in place to do serious damage inside the usa should they decide to.
                              People do hunt in Mexico but they usually rent the firearms. There is also a Utahn being held in Canada for bringing a weapon up there.
