My "what planet are you on" was more in reference to somehow, someway, VC spun the story to make "conservatives" look bad, when there was perfectly acceptable reasons for a Congressman to be involved. There is no evidence of this Congressman grandstanding, unless you think it is somehow grandstanding to take action.

More security personnel was sent to protect the WWII memorial than the state department had in Benghazi?
Wow, just wow. Those WWII vets are way more scary than terrorists.

Meanwhile, we're trying to get work done in the real world. We were able to move much of our engineer equipment to Colorado before the government shut-down. Now we're working feverishly to try to find a way to get everyone out there to operate the equipment and rebuild some roads. The dysfunction in Washington makes our job extremely difficult.

http://espn.go.com/college-football/...final-approvalOriginally posted by VirginiaCougar View PostWhy wouldn't the parks close? The shutdown removes (with just a few specific exceptions) the governments ability to pay any of its bills, regardless of whether the agency is financially self-sufficent or not. Another example, this weekend's Air Force vs. Navy Football game is cancelled because the travel and stadium costs can't be incurred, even if the football program were to generate sufficient revenue.
It is why a government shutdown is such a bad way to push a policy disagreement. You put at risk the full faith and credit of the US all for a narrow political disagreement.
Ha, VC totally got this one wrong. Not only were the games never cancelled, they are pretty ready to go even with the gov't shutdown. I'm starting to think this gov't shutdown is being intentionally elongated by the Dems so they can blame stuff on the GOP. Looks like they won't be able to blame the GOP for stopping college football games."Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

The last time the government did this shutdown during the clinton years the furloughed workers all got back pay for doing nothing. You should just tell everyone to go fishing and wait until congress pulls their heads out of their *sses.Originally posted by Bo Diddley View PostMeanwhile, we're trying to get work done in the real world. Well that's all fine to say, but every day matters as these roads can only be fixed until the snow falls. So we're under a pretty good time crunch. No time to wait until everyone comes back to work.Originally posted by Uncle Ted View PostThe last time the government did this shutdown during the clinton years the furloughed workers all got back pay for doing nothing. NPS Orders Closure of Park that Receives No Federal Funding
The National Park Service has ordered the closure of a Virginia park that sits on federal land, even though the government provides no resources for its maintenance or operation.
The Claude Moore Colonial Farm announced on Wednesday that NPS has ordered it to suspend operations until Congress agrees to a deal to fund the federal government.
According to Anna Eberly, managing director of the farm, NPS sent law enforcement agents to the park on Tuesday evening to remove staff and volunteers from the property.
“You do have to wonder about the wisdom of an organization that would use staff they don’t have the money to pay to evict visitors from a park site that operates without costing them any money,” she said.
The park withstood prior government shutdowns, noting in a news release that the farm will be closed to the public for the first time in 40 years.
“In previous budget dramas, the Farm has always been exempted since the NPS provides no staff or resources to operate the Farm,” Eberly explained in an emailed statement.
“In all the years I have worked with the National Park Service … I have never worked with a more arrogant, arbitrary and vindictive group representing the NPS,” Eberly said.
The farm is an historical reenactment site, which “authentically portrays the life of an 18th Century American family building a life on the nearer edges of civilized society,” according to its website.
Farm staff repeatedly asked the NPS to allow the farm to remain open. “Every appeal our Board of Directors made to the NPS administration was denied,” Eberly said.
She called the decision “utter crap.”

This article suggests that if congress doesn't raise the debt ceiling, Obama should simply ignore it.

That is what the first article I read said. I also posted immediately after that they were suspended until a final decision on Thursday which is consistent with this paragraph from the article you posted:Originally posted by Moliere View Posthttp://espn.go.com/college-football/...final-approval

But if it was that important, you are right I was wrong with the initial post as was the article I read. I am also quite pleased that they will be playing - glad it worked out.The Defense Department temporarily had suspended sports competition at the service academies Tuesday as a result of the partial government shutdown stemming from the budget impasse in Congress. All schools involved have said that a decision would be made by noon Thursday.
I also give props to BC for offering to help fund Army's travel costs:
BC athletic director Brad Bates indicated earlier Wednesday that the school offered financial assistance for Army's travel arrangements.
"We have been considering and engaging all possibilities in order to play Saturday's football game, including offering financial assistance to Army for travel," Bates said in a statement. "We have been told by officials at the US Military Academy, however, that this is not solely a financial decision. I remain in close communication with Army AD Boo Corrigan and we expect a decision will be made by noon (Thursday).Tell Graham to see. And tell Merrill to swing away.

So the Obama Administation made a mistake... They put up barricades around the WWII memorial that is normally open to the public and unguarded. Of course, folks just pushed the barricade aside.
Now they are doing it right. They got all these furloughed federal employees to stop watching reruns of Oprah and to march and protest around the memorial. Oh wait, they are not federal employees?!?
http://www.powerlineblog.com/archive...ar-ii-vets.phpThe same scene was reenacted again today as two Honor Flights from Missouri and Chicago arrived in prearranged visits. These Honor Flights were met by hundreds of ordinary citizens and about a dozen members of Congress, who once again crashed the barricades to let the veterans into the WW2 Memorial.
After about an hour, about 20 SEIU protesters arrived on the scene chanting “Boehner, get us back to work” and claiming they were federal employees furloughed because of the shutdown.
[...]
In the video below these protesters were marching towards the press gaggle and I was asking them to show their federal IDs to prove they were in fact federal workers. No one wore their federal ID and none would provide it to prove their claim.
Then, remarkably, a guy carrying a sign passed by wearing a McDonald’s employee shirt, which I noted. I then began asking them how much they had been paid to protest, at which point the guy wearing the McDonald’s shirt came back and admitted he had been paid $15 to attend the protest.

First, three guys from Minnesota (Powerline) are interesting. Conservative attorneys who decide to play their part in the great distortion of ideological media. I love how they call the protesters of their side honorable "citizens" who just happened to be there with a good number of Conservative Members of Congress when to everyone surprise some WWII vets showed up as if there was no coordination whatsoever. LOL, no politicization whatsoever!
Second, what a slimy thing for the union to do. That is not the place for that sort of thing, from left or right. If accurate, you often find places like Powerline being less than accurate, their actions are completely inappropriate.
Third, there are always security staff assigned to wander the various monuments. It is what makes them safe to visit, even at night. They make the rounds all the time even when not visible in all places at all times. There are also central locations where security can respond to any of the monuments quickly. In fact they try not to be too visible. If not properly staffed as normal, wouldn't the park service be at least morally if not more formally liable if something were to happen? In the age of terrorism, aren't they obligated to close the parks/monuments with the shutdown? Or put more of the limited staff on site if you get two groups politicizing the situation (with 80-90 year old vets between them. )
