I have never been a fan of Palin and she has said a ton of dumb things, but why would you say that? Everything in that quote is correct.Originally posted by creekster View PostWhat she said was: "They're our next-door neighbors, and you can actually see Russia from land here in Alaska, from an island in Alaska."
Maybe not quite as dumb as Fey's line, but in terms of its import for foreign policy it's pretty darn close.
Vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin did not say 'I can see Russia from my house.' That line originated with an SNL spoof.
In the middle of the Bering Strait are two small, sparsely populated islands: Big Diomede, which sits in Russian territory, and Little Diomede, which is part of the United States. At their closest, these two islands are a little less than two and a half miles apart, which means that, on a clear day, you can definitely see one from the other. To the Russian mainland from St. Lawrence Island, a bleak ice-bound expanse the size of Long Island out in the middle of the Bering Sea, the distance is 37 miles. From high ground there or from the Air Force facility at Tin City atop Cape Prince of Wales, the westernmost edge of mainland North America, on a clear day you can see Siberia with the naked eye."There is no creature more arrogant than a self-righteous libertarian on the web, am I right? Those folks are just intolerable."

What? Did I say it was incorrect? What I said was that, in terms of demonstrating prowess in foreign policy, Palin very meticulously and accurately noting that from an island within the territory of Alaska one can see an uninhabited island within the territory of Russia is meaningless, or about as meaningless as Fey's statement, despite it's accuracy. But if you found her accurate and snopes-approved statement to be useful in assessing her candidacy on foreign policy, then be my guest.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostI have never been a fan of Palin and she has said a ton of dumb things, but why would you say that? Lots of people mock and ridicule the statement on the basis that they believe there is no point in Alaska where one can see Russia. I thought that is what you were referring to.
In the context of all of the dumb things said by Sarah Palin, I have never understood why this one "meaningless" statement got so much traction. Oh well."There is no creature more arrogant than a self-righteous libertarian on the web, am I right? Those folks are just intolerable."

You asked me why I said what j said. I explained. I never claimed it was inaccurate nor did I attribute Fey's quote to her nor did I bring it up in the first place. I was just pointing out that though she didn't actually say what Fey said that's not really much of a defense.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostGood grief. I don't know....I have been expecting Trump to fade for months now. He hasn't and his numbers seem to improve when he spouts nonsense. I think there is a real possibility that he wins the nomination. His numbers have gone up, despite all of his rhetoric about Muslims in the wade of the Paris terrorist attacks. Perhaps there are more idiots in America than we ever thought and Trump has found out a way to get them all to vote for him.Originally posted by Maximus View Postrepub loons wont come close either. "As part of a broad national security plan to defeat ISIS, Republican Presidential candidate John Kasich proposed creating a new government agency to push Judeo-Christian values around the world.
The new agency, which he hasn't yet named, would promote a Jewish- and Christian-based belief system to four regions of the world: China, Iran, Russia and the Middle East.....He defended creating a new government agency at a time when fellow Republican presidential candidates discuss eliminating government agencies to making the government smaller."
