    Elected Representatives

Am I the only one that thinks it is a little ridiculous to elect people to such offices as sheriff, judge, district attorney.

I see several issues with it.

First, most people don't care and don't look into who would do the best job. It really is impractical to looking into. I don't have the background in law or enforcement to judge these people's competence. I'm not familiar with sound accounting practices that would make a good county auditor.

Second, do we really want the people who are most popular or do we want the most competent. Do we want the best fund raisers?

Third, I don't like that fact that the Sheriff and attorney general are getting campaign contributions. Now obviously this problem doesn't completely go away when these positions are appointed, but at least there is at least one level of separation between the money and the favors.

All these problems contribute to the butterfly ballot, hanging chad problem.

Do we really need a computer to vote? Voting shouldn't be that difficult. It really does seem like a waste to me.

I would rather just have executive and legislative representatives at each level of government and the rest appointed. I guess I support a republic more than a democracy.

It sounds like someone has been recently pulled over for speeding, felt it was entrapment but his request that it be dismissed has been denied in traffic court.

No, I think it is a bad idea too. We have elected Sheriff and D.A.'s here and that works out okay, but that is not a system I endorse. The battles for Sheriff here, for example, have been very ugly and grade-schoolish.

Well, I've heard stories at my work about losing government bids when other competitors have contributed to campaigns, but I'm not familiar enough with the situation to relay it.

That is about as mistreated as I've been. I just think it is kind of poor process of picking civil servants.
