If the definition of the American Dream is being better off than the previous generation, the AD has been dead for a generation or so. Ultimately, we're not going to be nearly as well off as our parents - our generation had a nice first half of our lives, but the last half is gonna pretty much suck. And our kids' generation? Fuhgeddaboudit...
There are innumerable ways that people today have things so much better than the generation before us and this progress is going to continue. A few things that come to mind:
Anybody with a smartphone has an information and entertainment resource better than anything that was available to the President of the United States just 20 years ago.
Medical care is so much better -- 30 years ago every cardiologist took care of hundreds of patients with disabling chronic angina and these days such a thing is very, very rare because the coronary arteries can just be stented open and there are great medications. Similar progress has been made obviously in a lot of other areas in medicine.
Moving on to more trivial things, even a starter car like an 8-year old used car is so incredibly better than even new cars in the 80s. The new cars I remember my parents getting as a kid were terrible.
Then obviously the entertainment options today as far as music, movies and video games are so incredibly better than they were in the 80s.
I agree that we need to get our debt under control as a nation and cut entitlements, but hell I would have to make 10 times as much money as I do now to agree to go back to a 1980s USA. There was a poll recently given to college students asking how many would forgo all internet access for a year for a million dollars and very few of them would do it.
LOL. He is so rich he now feeds his yogurt to his dogs.
