  • Romney's Tithing

I have posted repeatedly that the reason Romney doesn't want to release is tax returns is because he underpaid on his tithing for many years. Some of you mocked this idea, but I thought it was obvious. In the two years that he released, he paid 7% tithing and 12% tithing, working out to almost 10% total.

I'd be willing to bet that he was paying less than 5% tithing for many years.

Now in an interview he says that the reason he doesn't want to release the returns is because he wants his tithing to remain private:

Romney pulled in more than $40 million in 2010 and 2011, his campaign reported, and paid about $4.1 million to the LDS Church. That’s in addition to about $4.8 million his Tyler Charitable Foundation donated to the faith.
My math sez more than 10%. Of course, Stake Presidents don't have to pay a full tithing. It is one of the benefits of being "the man".

I prepaid my tithing once because I had some stock that took off like a bat out of hell. I wanted to be unpatriotic and screw Uncle Sam out of a sh*tload of capital gains. It felt good.

Great point, SoonerCoug. He clearly isn't releasing his taxes so he can protect his reputation amongst Mormons.

Can he get away with saying that he will or won't do things for religious reasons but that he's not going to talk about his religion?

I think he is too, but not because of this. My true objection to this is that it is very cynical. He has other good reasons not to want to share them and he is hiding behind his church.

Cali Coug is also very cynical like that and rightfully so! The American people deserve to know details about the investments made by his blind trust and how much he pays in tithing.

It's so important when every day people in this country are struggling to put food on the table, wondering when they'll get their next paycheck and hoping they'll find a job. When national debt is skyrocketing, the dollar is plummeting and our entitlement structure is on the brink of collapse, it is essential that we talk about Mitt Romney's tax returns! I know Mitt Romney has never been accused of abusing political power or seeking to manipulate public funds for the benefit of himself or his friends and he's fully followed all disclosure law, but dammit we need to know what he has in his Swiss and Cayman Island bank accounts! Maybe it's a bank sack with a gun, stacks of unmarked cash and multiple passports like in the Bourne movies. Or maybe it's just a key to another safe deposit box that nobody even knows about, not even Ann Romney. Who knows? We can only speculate.

You make it sound as if only Mormons know what a "full tithe" is and only Mormons care about that kind of stuff. It opens up an entire new line of attack (frivolous, but possibly effective) where the Obama campaign can claim he was dishonest with his own church, claiming to have paid a full tithe when he didn't. How can we trust such a liar?

I think it's clear from years and years of messageboard exchanges that Mormons don't know what a "full tithe" is. Since the criteria involves determining what your "increase" is and since the Church hasn't advocated GAAP or Statutory accounting...

I highly suspect that Harry Reid hasn't paid any tithing given he hasn't released any of his tax filings.

I have a friend that attended church with him in DC and he told me that Harry Reid steals fast offering envelopes from the Deacons. Not sure if it's true, though.

but there are plenty of people who think they know and journalists could easily turn it however they wanted to.
