This is horrific. Clearly the woman wanted the baby, so it doesn't speak to the gender imbalance issue. But China's one child policy is leading to a demographic crisis where there are tens of millions more men than women in that country.

If you must have a one child policy (which is abhorrent) then here's an idea-- allow people to have as many girls as they want until they have a boy. Quit killing off all the little girls you assholes (and all the little boys, which is more rare).

Latin America's birthrate has also declined dramatically. I read somewhere that the average woman in Mexico had something like 6 kids in 70s, and now that's around 2.5.

I mentioned this column the other day, but Michael Barone wrote about how demographic shifts are presumed to continue into the future until they all of a sudden stop. An example in the past was blacks moving to industrial cities in the North. That largely stopped when the civil rights legislation was passed in the 60s.

He argued that the same thing is happening with immigration from Mexico and Central America. I'm not sure if he mentioned the declining birthrate, but he did mention the improving economy in Mexico. But the declining birthrate will most definitely have an equal if not greater effect on the stalled flow of Mexican/Central American immigrants.

As for the teeming masses of Muslims, I presume their populations in countries like France, the UK, and Germany will reach a breaking point when the ethnic French, British and Germans won't stand for it anymore if the Muslim populations don't fully integrate (especially the Germans).

So - at some point doesn't that make having a daughter more valuable than having a son?

Meaning - at some point aren't there so many men around and so few women that women start driving things. And depending on marriage age, the woman's parents. Things like "Yeah, you can marry my daughter. But only if you purchase a home for her mother and I".

Another aspect - and I admit to not reading the article - aren't there examples out there within populations of other mammals that when there was a huge gender imbalance, greater portions of the population had sexual relationships with members of the same gender? I'd be curious to see if something similar happened in this case.
