I talked to a guy a couple weeks ago who is in some seriously dire financial straits. He has an MBA but IIRC it was from some place like University of Phoenix. He has some crushing student debt. His job as a financial planner didn't work out.
He's compounding the problem by doing some online program for, I think, a Phd in business and he plans on teaching. Maybe I heard it wrong, but I was shocked that someone could get a PHd on line. I told him to look into what kind of money he would make once he gets that piece of paper from the online "school" and consider whether it's worth it to take out the additional debt.
The problem as I see it is twofold:
1) There are too many schools and too many degrees floating around out there. Many of these degrees aren't worth a damn -- yet the debt associated with it is nondischargeable. Either make the loans dischargeable in bankruptcy and introduce more market forces into the mix (i.e. protect people from themselves by making the lenders bear more risk thus making it more difficult to obtain loans), or there needs to be a massive reform where there will only be federal loan subsidies for certain schools and even certain areas of study.
2) In the past, people could get past unfortunate and ill-informed decisions to obtain worthless higher degrees through a more dynamic job market. They could find something else to do, make good money at it and alter their courses. But the job market is garbage right now so it seems these people are more apt to cling to the original plan which for right now means making a pittance at a bunch of community colleges.Last edited by Color Me Badd Fan; 05-10-2012, 03:18 PM.Part of it is based on academic grounds. seriously though, any graduate student in the humanities or the social sciences who has to pay their tuition and fees is either at the wrong school or shouldn't be in the program to begin with. Most schools have a slave labor contract with these whereby they are funded (tuition, fees and insurance paid for along with a small stipend) in exchange for teaching courses. Anyone who attends graduate school without some sort of fellowship or agreement for a teaching assistantship is crazy to take on debt for a degree that presents you with so few options for a career path and such low wages.Dio perdona tante cose per un’opera di misericordia

This is what I did. When I was considering which school to attend, I looked at how much they were offering me and how much I would be required to teach, or what research I could eventually get myself into. I ended up with Oregon State, because the focus of the college and the opportunites were more in line what I wanted to do - resource geography and remote sensing. Utah offered me more money (along with full tuition, which they all did), but I told them to suck it.Originally posted by pellegrino View Post
