  • Where have you gone Milton....

Paradise Lost does not get nearly the attention it deserves. My favorite character is Satan. I know that when Waters called me Satan he was alluding to Milton's Satan, who steals the show.
When a true genius appears, you can know him by this sign: that all the dunces are in a confederacy against him.

I'll grant you that. Of all the characters in the Judeo-Christian tradition, Satan is far and away the most interesting.

I would put Jesus at the top of my list. Then Moses and Paul. Satan would be down the list for me. Way down the list.

The most intriguing character, as well all know from our reading, was Satan.

Now was Milton trying to tell us that being bad was more fun than being good?
        Fitter. Happier. More Productive.

Milton is on the beach drinking a margarita, no salt.

              Hmmmm.

How do you know he wasn't alluding to Bulgakov's Satan, from The Master and Margarita? That devil is also famously entertaining.

Plus, I recall Waters is a big fan of samizdat.

The Master and the Margarita, there's a book that doesn't get enough discussion. The devil as a symbol of the state? Pure genius.

That would be okay too. See, this is why I love Waters.
