  • If I had son, he would look like Trayvon...

this is political opportunism at its worst. What a despicable thing for Obamao to say, particularly because he doesn't give a damn about anything other than himself.

Any of his supporters care to defend this?

Here's a good response to your post, though I'm not really an Obama supporter.

YOUR post would be crass political opportunism. But I doubt even the worst of Republican candidates would be foolish enough to be as foul as you are responding to Obama's highly symbolic point (which you obviously don't get). You must have gotten the idea from some white supremacist site. Your loony hillbilly rants are really wearing thin for most of us (I'm sure).

I think what bothers me the most is things like this happen all the time.. Yet Obama seems to provide a public comment when cases are racially motivated.. Of course this may not be by his own doing, so I don't allow it to bother as much..

There's nothing to defend. His words aren't political, they're on a personal level. Your judgement is so clouded by your hatred that you can't see the situation for it really is. What really needs a defense here is the level to which you're disconnected from reality.

Let's break it down a bit further and see what's so objectionable about his words:

            Obviously this is a tragedy.
That's true. This is a tragedy.

I can't only imagine what these parents are going through.
I see things like that said all the time even on this board. There's nothing political there.

When I think about this boy, I think about my own kids.
Also something that gets said even here on the board regularly when people are discussing a tragedy. The President is a human, he's a parent, he's allowed to feel sad. He's also allowed to relate the pain others are feeling to how he would feel if it happened to his kids. That's not political.

And I think every parent in America should be able to understand why it is absolutely imperative that we investigate every aspect of this, and that everybody pulls together, federal, state, and local, to figure out exactly how this tragedy happened.
If anything that's apolitical. That's something an executive would say in a general sense. There's no blame assigned, just "we need to bind together to figure this out."

So I'm glad that not only is the Justice Department looking into it, I understand that the Governor of the state of Florida has formed a task force to investigate what's taken place.
            Also not political.

I think all of us have to do some soul-searching to figure out how does something like this happen. That means that we examine the laws and the context for what happened, as well as the specifics of the incident.
Soul-searching is always good any time there's a tragedy. He didn't assign blame, which could've been politically-motivated, but instead he kept it general as you'd expect an executive to do.

But my main message is to the parents of Trayvon Martin. You know, if I had a son he'd look like Trayvon.
That's a fact. Should I post pictures so you can see and recognize the fact that Trayvon Martin is a slender black boy and President Obama is a slender black man?

I think they are right to expect that all of us as Americans are going to take this with the serious that it deserves, and we're going to get to the bottom of what happened.
No finger-pointing, no politics, just "we're going to investigate."

So... now that we've gone through the comments, I would suggest that perhaps it's you that's turning a clearly-apolitical comment into a political one. Maybe you need to do some soul-searching about what's going on in your own heart that makes you see politics where they aren't.

              Agreed.
One of the grandest benefits of the enlightenment was the realization that our moral sense must be based on the welfare of living individuals, not on their immortal souls. Honest and passionate folks can strongly disagree regarding spiritual matters, so it's imperative that we not allow such considerations to infringe on the real happiness of real people.

IPU, do you agree with Romney, Santorum, Gingrich, the Governor of Florida, and President Obama that this is a tragedy?

Sorry, Tim, but your words are clouded by your unconditional worship of Obamao. This was a black teen who was killed by what people assume is an racist white man and Obamao jumped on the chance to feign sympathy. Where was his concern in January when this happened:

These are the perps in that murder:

No, this was a political move on Obamao's part.

Yes. McKay Coppins called them all out for not speaking to it.

Wow, you really are making a fool of yourself today. And as someone who sometimes makes a fool of himself, I know it when I see it.

You're wrong, IPU. Correct yourself or walk away from this one, because you're simply wrong on this.

I know. McKay Coppins wrote an article earlier titled Silence From Romney, Santorum on Trayvon Martin. It now has [Updated] added to it.
