  • Sometimes, the Utah State Senate gets it right...

this is one example of it, though it's still in the "getting it right" category.

I am a 2nd amendment supporter. However, I understand the difficult balance that needs to be had between public safety and someone's right to tote a gun on their hip while walking in the local park. I don't know if there is a right asnwer on this as it depends on the individual carrying the gun.

I have no problem not allowing convicted felons to carry. They forfeited that right when they willingly chose to break the law. But law abiding citizens should be allowed to openly carry should they choose to do so.

I am sure that if this passes that we are not going to see a fashion boom of designer holsters in Utah and that it will likely only affect a few individuals that want to openly carry a weapon. But, if I show up to my daughter's soccer game at the local park and one of the kids' parents from the other team is carrying a gun, I am grabbing my daughter and going home. It is just not a risk that I am willing to take despite whether it is legal or not.

I thought you were going to work in this story somehow.

So the police should be able to stop anyone who open carries, ask for ID and run a background check? There is no good reason to open carry other that to threaten and intimidate those around you. Disallowing citizens to open carry does not infringe on their right to bear arms. You can just conceal carry and wear a t-shirt that says "I have an incredibly small penis." Same effect without causing unnecessary stress on the community or burden on law enforcement.

It's your choice to take your daughter and go home. I don't begrudge you doing that at all.

I was merely commenting on my thought process when I saw your thread; I wasn't suggesting any change on your part. I saw the other story on Yahoo this morning, so it was the first thing that came to mind when I saw the title of your thread (I was waiting for a "...and sometimes they don't" or something like that).

What exactly is the added benefit of openly carrying?

Ironic that the state that worries perhaps most about the "message" we send to kids when gays marry is also the state that will send the message to kids that walking around with a six shooter on your hip a la Butch Cassidy is perfectly normal behavior.

What's next in Utah? Prohibiting anything but abstinence-based sex ed in schools?
