Interesting that with three burned cars resulting in three deaths over the last three months that they are looking for ties between the three. It's hard to believe that the deaths, since they have all been pretty similar, were completely unrelated. This could be an interesting story to follow if it turns out that there is some credibility behind this story...

What are the core doctrines of polygamists in relation to their role in society? Do they do service in the community? Do they donate supplies to charities or relief efforts? Do they have welfare or humanitarian programs? Do they run schools or promote education?

Polygamists live an insular, secretive existence (not to mention illegal). I have yet to hear any positive news story that involves polygamy. I don't think I can say that about any other single religious group or sect. I have heard of kidnapping, rape, brainwashing, beatings, murder, welfare fraud, subjugation of women, isolationism, etc.

At this point, it just isn't that much of a stretch to think that secretive polygamists are involved in murder.

There are probably some polygamists that are just fine. I know there are some that don't belong to the Jeff's type sects. I am sure you meant the "bad polygamists". Probably any religious group that is shunned by the majority are secretive and isolated. Probably like those in the early church.

Very well put. My wife and her sister knew a "lost boy" themselves quite well, let's call him Nate. Nate and another lost boy, let's call him David, tried to extract David's younger sister from the Colorado City/Hildale group. At some point, all communications to the younger sister were cut off (she was put into isolation) and these two guys received death threats and were warned to never try to contact her again.

I hate to keep on harping on some of the CB knuckledraggers, but I found the level of outrage at the Texas authorities involved with the raid by many of the posters to be quite interesting. All of a sudden, people who can find no fault on the part of the US government in its conduct on the war on terror are totally outraged. So I guess the line has to be drawn when the Texas officials are violating the rights of a group of people that are involved with subjogating and isolating their girls and young women, marrying 14 year old Eliza off to 45 year old Uncle Hyrum, and engaged in rampant tax and welfare fraud.

Yeah, I was trying to distinguish between polygamist doctrines and random polygamists that I am sure have their good and bad people, just like everywhere else.

I concur that the negative social stigma associated with cults contributes to the isolationism, but I am not sure I would call it "shunning." These folks are technically lawbreakers and engage in child rape, so it is hard to feel much sympathy for that, at least on my part. The alternative would be for society to say, "hey, cool that you are marrying your 14 year old niece and she can never leave the compound unsupervised."

The Amish have found ways to integrate into modern society, even developing a beneficial economic relationship with outsiders and thereby becoming productive members of their community. They dress differently and look different, but they seem to be contributing. Are polygamists able to say the same thing? From a religious standpoint, how does that jibe with the general Christian edict of service, love for fellowman, missionary work, etc? It seems incongruous.

waupinmon has a pool? He must not be very good at handling his finances because DH lives on the other side of the country. Weekly cleanings must be very expensive, air fare, equipment rental, hotel, food. I would think waup could find someone much cheaper to clean the pool.
