I agree about many roads in bountiful basically being downhill slaloms.
I guess I don't really know how to explain it, if you can't tell that's steep by watching that video. Here is my attempt, however. A 6% grade (just throwing out an example--I have no idea the grade on that road. 6% grade signs are fairly common along highways) is a really steep road(6 feet of descent for every 100 linear feet), but is actually a more gradual slope than an ADA-compliant wheelchair ramp (1 inch of decline for every 12 linear inches).

Personally, I think that road looks steep just by looking at it.

At one point you can see a road sign that says 1000 - something East. Yeah - anything around 1000 East on 400 North in Bountiful is going to be pretty steep - and it's even steeper a little higher, so they would have some speed coming into that stretch. I mean steep enough that I wouldn't try to run down it - and I kind of like running hills now and then.

I understand it was pretty bad even in the flat parts of town. My wife was getting ready to head to the store when a complete stranger saw her he stopped at the end of our driveway and told her to stay home. She said something about needing to do some shopping before Sunday, and he told her "The ox is in the mire! Do your shopping tomorrow - the Lord will understand!" He went on to tell her that the entire bottom of 400 N was littered with accidents. We got a pretty good chuckle out of it.

My question is why wasn't this road plowed/salted? Where I grew up these types of roads were targeted to be plowed first and after that several more times during a storm.

That was probably the funniest thing I have ever seen. I know it's cruel to laugh at others' misfortune, but that seriously cracked me up, especially the one that hit the plow. Of course, it had to be an SUV, and I'll bet they were in 4WD, too.

I know people in snow country generally feel safer about driving in snow, but there are certain circumstances where they should not. I like living in a place where life shuts down when it snows.

I know. I was making a general observation about the frequency that roads like this are plowed and salted.

Sorry but that was lame. Not as entertaining as the Bountiful one...

There were plows out all day - but keep in mind that once the rain turned to snow it was snowing heavy for several hours. There was enough water on the roads from the rain that I'm not sure salt would've helped initially - it wouldv'e washed away. And then when the snow came there was a lot at once. And there are a bunch of roads like this in the Bountiful foothills - so I can understand not being able to stay on top of it at the height of the storm.
